Milky Lawlor was an institution, appeared for years at the Red Garter, among other places. He did the Al Jolson impersonation.

Steve did not do the Jolson act; that was Mike "Al Jolson" Gallo. Steve did the afternoon Jam Session. He knew 10,000 people on a first name basis. I worked with him at the Red Garter, and when I would come on for nights, Steve would never fail to recognize me and tell a little joke or make a wry observation. His genius was that he could do that for every person who walked through the door. He was always a real gentleman; in the late '70's a lot of the guys who worked at the Garter lived both above and next to Steve at 4th & Surf. We were no bargain with the hours we kept. If we bothered him, Steve never showed it. We thought so much of Steve that we even named one of our friends after him. Steve "Milky" Haines proudly carries on the tradition of enjoying a fine Scotch, and staying out of the sun during the day to keep his skin a perfect milk white. Cheers Steve, you are missed.
