WILDWOOD -- A four-day film festival will come to Wildwood in 2007, paving the way for what sponsors hope will be the exposure of possible location sites for the filming of movies on the island.
The Wildwood By The Sea Film Festival will take place Sept. 27-30 and will include the showing of selected movies by independent filmmakers as well as high profile people in the film industry, according to Paul Russo, festival producer.
A keynote of the festival will be the premiere showing of a new documentary on the life of thingy Clark, currently being shot in the Wildwoods and elsewhere. Clark’s first national broadcast of American Bandstand was aired live on ABC-TV from the Starlight Ballroom on Aug. 5, 1957.
Collaborating with Russo on the documentary and the festival will be filmmaker Shawn Swords who recently completed a documentary called “Fabulous” on the life of legendary entertainer Charlie Gracie. Shown on Channel 12 in Philadelphia , it turned out to be the biggest money-maker of any of the public television stations fundraising programs, according to Russo..
“This will be the first honest, comprehensive look at thingy Clark’s Bandstand career and will generate a lot of industry interest,” said Swords, director of the film and director of operations of Character Driven Productions, which has made other films including the feature length “Love, Friendship and Hypocrisy” and the documentary “Blackthorn: It’s An Irish Thing.”
Russo said the idea for the festival came when he was introduced to Swords at another event and they concurred that the Wildwoods would be an excellent place to hold a film festival.
“We want to showcase the island to movie producers and others, so they may make their movies here,” said Russo. “We believe there are many places on the island that are conducive to movie making.”
Several films, mainly documentaries, have been made in the Wildwoods in recent years. One not a documentary was “Touched,” starring Robert Hays and Ned Beatty, filmed in 1982. Pompeo’s Boardwalk restaurant and the beach were among the locations that were used. The film had its world premiere at the Wildwood movie house, since torn down, at the corner of Atlantic and Schellenger avenues.
