Ocean City, NJ is actually a very beautiful resort town in an antiseptic kind of way. The upkeep on their almost too pristione boardwalk is perhaps second to none as far as I'm concerned. It demonstrates HOW a boardwalk can and shuld be taken care of.
However, that does not mean that they have the kitschy, honky-tonk appeal that has always been the cornerstone of the Wildwoods.
I love Wildwood too, but I'm under no illusion about what it was, is, and migth one day become because it its what it is - that is until the arrival of big time demoliton and development.
The difference between Ocean City, NJ and Wildwood to a lot of ignorant people is that if Ocean City tried to emulate Wildwood it would be considered a step down; if Wildwood tried to become Ocean City, it would be considered a step up. Not only is that type of thinking ridiculous but it'ss just unfair.

You seem very nice We moved cause hubby now works at one of the Parks in OC...and it saves him time getting back and forth to work. The OC Boardwalk IS different than WW...much mellower...but the whole town is different...not 'snobby'...but more...conservitive I guess. As you know, this is a dry town, no liquor stores or booze in the restaurants, and there are no games of chance on this B'Walk...but it IS open year round(a number of shops stay open). ..and of course I'm nice...but you seemed to have set me up with the "Ocean city= stuck up snobs!" remark.

Look. The best thing about the Jersey Shore is that along it's 140 miles of coastline the towns are so different that choices are not regulated to just one type of resort community. You find one that suits your needs. It's as simple as that.
My in-laws live in Cape Cod, and while the place is beautiful I would be bored out of my head if I had to spend more than a long 4-day weekend there. It's not kid-friendly either so unless your family truly loves miniature golf or looking at old lighthouses best of luck to you.
I'll stick to Jersey when it comes to beaches and boardwalks. It's served me wel for my entire life so there's no reason to change now.
Yes. It's true that the people north of Wildwod tend to seem more "upscale" in their thinking - and that's not a bad thing. It is simply an observation. But really, they are no worse than the people in and around the Diamond Beach area of Wildwood Crest, who are far more snobby than anyone I've ever seen come to this island throughout my 43 years.

Some college fraternity buddies of mine own the Jilly's franchise in O.C., so I stop down for a couple of days before my Wildwood vacation every year.
I think Ocean City is a fine town and a cool boardwalk. Completely different from Wildwood, but there's definitly stuff worth checking out. There's a cool diversity of shops on the boardwalk, a number of themed mini-golf courses, Gillian's is cool for its historic value, and of course Jilly's arcade and French Fry Factory (*plug plug*).

Wildwood has come a long way since the 70's and the hypodermic needles on the boardwalk.

The bad thing about Wildwood is all the demolitions and condos, and with Morey's pretty much running the show on the piers there's not much progress happening in regards to building Hunt's back up again, reopening the Nugget, buliding a new castle, etc. If there was even a little competition down there like in the 70's and 80's when several different pier operators battled it out for tourists' business and dollars there might be some progress. I guess it's becoming too much for the Morey's to handle, they don't want 4 or 5 well stocked amusement piers, 3 or so is enough for them. I can see the Morey's buying out Nickels, too. And Sportland, as well. In other places like Ocean City, NJ and MD, and Seaside Heights, there's competition. Every amusement facility is owned by different people.
