Looks like you're in North Wildwood somewhere, Frank, but I can't pinpoint the exact location...
I was also born in NE Philly (Jeans Hospital). Grew up in the Olney section, and now live in Lawncrest.
My fiance and I just recently purchased our first home, where we live with our 12-month-old son, Lucas.
I've been vacationing in Wildwood since I was a newborn, and never plan to stop!

Looks like the Aqua Beach in the background so I'd guess you were next to the Adventurer

Great pix frank, don't you think one of the luckiest guys in the world is the guy who maintains the landscaping in you pix. can you imagine, the sound of smell of the surf, the view, fresh air in WWC. Wow... doesn't get much better.
I grew up in NE Philly as well as you and Al but near Academy and Comly (nabisco) Now I live in Yardley with my wife and two girls ages 6 and 4. My father vacationed in WW as a child and continued that with his children. In the early sixtys, we stayed in an apartment above a club (can't remember the name offhand) in WW then we stayed at gold crest its maiden year and then diamond crest in it's maiden year. I learned to swim in the DC pool. After that our family stayed in apartments on stockton road. When I was in 11th grade, I left home for the first time for a summer at WWC (where else) some great memories of that summer. Repeated in 12th grade. Since then, our family hangs out at the jolly roger, a sleeper but a great place for families, lots of repeat visitors. I miss WWC like crazy in the winter.

Ah, nice, another Philly guy! I pass the old Nabisco building up on "the boulevard" several times a week, as I trek to and from the Flyers SkateZone up in the Great Northeast. There is/was nothing like Wildwood Crest at the height of the summer season. Just a magical place. Have you ever visited in the dead of winter? I try to get down to the island at least once a month, year round... It's a whole different world around this time of year. P.S. -- Do you happen to have dates (years) on the openings of both the Gold Crest and the Diamond Crest? I am currently working on a broad history of motels on the island, and I have conflicting dates on both.

When we owned property on stockton rd, I used to go in the winter all of the time. I always enjoyed checking out all of the closed motels, they had this musuem quality to them in the dead of winter. My wife of course just rolled her eyes wondering what I was doing out there in freezing weather looking at empty buildings but it has always been a passion of mine. There seems to be much more people there these days full time. When I used to go years ago, it was truly a ghost town. I believe the gold crest opened around 1966, 67 and diamond crest a year after gold crest. Now you've got me thinking, I know I was about 8 years old when we stayed at the gold crest. What dates were you given?

Those dates are pretty close to what I have, beachboy...
I've got 66 or 67 for the Diamond Crest and 67, 68 or 69 for the Gold Crest. I have heard that they were opened in consecutive years, as you confirmed. Thanks for the info!
You're right, there is much more of a "year round" mentality in the Wildwoods these days. The Crest is no longer the ghost town it once was in, say, January or February, but it can still be pretty desolate on some days.
I was down there one weekend afternoon in late December and, man, was it dead. You just stand in one spot, look at the slumbering motels, the empty streets and the gray sky, and try to imagine how different the same scene will be in several months time.
It can truly blow your mind, sometimes (well, at least mine!).
Great analogy, by the way, about the "museum quality" of the motels in the quiet of the offseason.
My fiance also laughs at me (and believes I'm insane) when I get out of the car and stand there and shiver like an idiot, snapping photos of various Doo Wop motels in freezing temperatures.
Ah, for the love of the Wildwoods... 365/12/7/24!!!!!

Incredible: Frank: It's hard to explain the feeling. Most people I know who go to other shore points just don't understand the pull of this place. I find myself thinking of this town constantly. I've never felt that way about any other place I've visited. My inlaws live in Myrtle beach, a wonderful place. We go 2x /year to visit so the kids can visit with mom mom and pop pop and I love them too but would give myrtle beach up in a heartbeat for some time in WWC.
Since you're about my age, did you catch any of the trivia I posted. Thought it may be fun to run down some old times. Do you have any Trivia?

Al: Those dates sound about right. I'll have to ask my dad. One of his bragging rights back then was we stayed in those places in their maiden years. Times were tough and he was very proud of that. Sounds crazy, I know, but these things are important in my life. Those dates are pretty close to what I have, beachboy... I've got 66 or 67 for the Diamond Crest and 67, 68 or 69 for the Gold Crest.
