The Packard Motel was such a fixture in North Wildwood, it’s almost impossible for me to believe that it could be gone.
Though I never stayed there, just seeing that big, classic brown, yellow and white roadside sign on Surf Ave. on our way into town (we often entered the island through North WW, off of that winding Parkway exit) was like an official indication that our vacation had begun!
On day trips, we would (and still do) park in the old Hunt’s Pier lot, right next to the Packard. I can’t believe that it won’t be there the next time we go down.
Incidentally, mig, I’d love to see your pics of the Packard. I took some shots of the motel a few months ago as well, when I heard that the property had been approved for (ung)… more new condos.
Frank, I always found it cool that the Packard’s sign featured an exact replica of the old Packard Motor Company logo. I wonder what the trademark issues with that were, when it was built back in the 50s. I mean, I can’t imagine an independent “Ford Motel” going up today, using the company’s logo design in any capacity.
Then again, I suppose it was/would be tremendous (and free!) publicity.
Then again (part II), I guess I don’t know for sure that the old Packard Company (or someone officially associated with it) didn’t have some sort of stake in the motel originally.
Yet another interesting aspect of Wildwood history to look into…

Im not sure of the details Al but this was told to me years ago.. I believe that someone at packard had a hand in the design in some way.. so sad..

Very, very interesting...
By the way, Frank, aside from the Packard and the Bel Air in the Crest, how many motels in the Wildwoods can you think of that got their names/themes from popular automobiles?

Though not named after any particular car, per se, the Daytona Motor Inn (formerly the Polaski) on Atlantic Ave. in Wildwood certainly has an automobile-related motif.
The motel's neon sign (stock car design) is a colorful sight to see at night!

I'm surprised I didn't think of the Skylark...
Another classic 50s motel located right in the middle of the area of Wildwood I've been staying in lately.

Does anybody know about the Shore Plaza Motel at 26th, and boardwalk? It would seem to be a great spot for developers to put condos. And check out their 2nd floor lobby, it is perfectely preserved from the 1960's!

I recently heard that the Waterways motel in Wildwood Crest just sent out letters stating that they are closing. Has anyone heard this?

Don't know, but their site is down . IIRC, that is/was owned by the people who own Duffinetti's Restaurant - maybe try to contact them?
