I guess the only small saving grace, if there even is one is that i think the orginal pool from the T-bird is still a part of the condos(at least that's it looked in the drawings of the condo.)

Actually, Hulk, the original pool idea was scrapped... or was never part of the plan at all, depending on who you listen to.
I went right to the source on this one, and was told by the developer that a completely new pool would be built for this project.
That's a shame, because, as you said, it would have been nice to have even one little aspect of the old Thunderbird retained.
As it is, the only shred that remains, miniscule as it is, is the name. They will be called the Thunderbird Condos, which... well, really means nothing. But, it is what it is.

You will always have the memories Al. I, myself am glad i was able to enjoy a few adult beverages at the tiki bar last summer before the motel came down.

How was the Pyramid?

While staying at the Pyramid I got info. That place recently changed owners and the women is not selling(would not even consider it) And here's something to think about the motels that do tough things out will benefit because they will be able to raise their rates and still be able to fill up. So its the end these motel owners will rewarded for not selling. Good to hear. That little section of the Crest (that is often forgotten) is still well intact. While the La Vita is going under a condo conversion, they kept the recessed "space ship" lights, and it appears (at least when I was there) that they are keeping the neon sign, as they lit it up one day. There were no major changes to the building, just new railings, doors, etc. The building looks almost identical.

The windows don't look right on the La Vita, and the railings are "off" too IMO, but at least it's still around and they're trying. It's been renovated basically from the ground up.

Al, do you recall what place was behind the CS across the street from the Apollo. Is wasn't the Town and Country was it? Hulk, the structure behind the Carriage Stop across from the Apollo is the little Atlantis condo that was grown from the Internationale motel, originally known as the Atlantis Lodge when it was built around '54. The developer stretched it westward, and added a third floor and oceanfront balconies, but it still looks a lot like the Atlantis Lodge to me. We stayed there every summer from the mid-50s until the early 70s when the Reges was built. I looked through a couple of my Wildwood print packs and found these shots I took of it back in 1997, which may have been the first year it was offered as a condo, but don't hold me to that . The Town & Country was on Farragut, quite a bit farther north.

For those who have not seen, this is what was going on with the La Vita. Bad picture from rain, but you will get an idea. Now Then While it dosen't look as "doo-wop" as it used to, it certainly did not loose as much character as other conversions where roofs and other major features are completely altered.

Its a nice little place Martin. Clean rooms and a large pool that hardly has anyone around it(at least that was the case when I stayed there. The new private condo being built next to it makes it look small but the Pyramid is definitly worth looking into if you want to stay in the crest.

Aa far as the LaVita goes the sign is pretty much the only good thing they saved. A question for those reading this. How long do you think the CS will be on the market, the almost 7.5 mil price tag seems kind of high.

That's a good photo Kathi. Is that little place behind it the Cavilier? Thanks. The Cavalier was indeed just south of the Atlantis on the next block, but I believe this view of the Atlantis is looking northwest and the thing you're asking about is the crappy little annex to the Atlantis Lodge that was built along the west side of its lot in the late 50s or early 60s. I don't recall exactly how that separate structure was handled in the condo conversion, and it may not even be there anymore. I don't think I've taken a close look at the Atlantis from the street side since 2003. I have a bigger version of the shot parked here that shows a little more detail on the left side of the frame: img169.imageshack.us/img169/1676/atlantiscondowebur1.jpgI just discovered there's a bit of web memorabilia of the Cavalier here... www.computerslime.com/Cavalier/CavalierLocation.html

Gee Wiz, I thought the Cavalier was only a 2 story motel. From the website it looks like a big place. I had no idea it would be gone this year or i would have taken some pics. To my understanding the motel even had a coffee shop. Does anyone have any pictures of the Cavalier they could post?

The Cavalier's listing page on Beachcomber.com is still up and has a couple of clearer images of it, in case you didn't see that: www.beachcomber.com/Wwcrest/cavalier.htmlIt was a decent sized motel, yes. As many years as we stayed next door, I can't picture the coffee shop, but it probably did have one. Looks like that could be a coffee shop on the oceanfront end in the top picture on the Beachcomber page. The Cavalier was #10 or #11 in Tripadvisor.com's WWC ratings until recently when they removed it (perhaps in response to a message I had sent a couple of days earlier to inform them of its demise). As a typical old-school Crest motel where "everyday people" could celebrate a few days of R&R and mingle with other vacationers in that glorious beachfront setting, it is another significant loss to the Wildwoods. The condos replacing it will range in price from $1.39 to $3 million, according to the owners in an article that wildre posted about it a while back. Radical change of clientele there... dwpl.proboards44.com/index.cgi?board=motels&action=display&thread=1141579580&page=1#1141579580I had no idea it was doomed, either, until reading about it here. I hope there's at least a picture of its nice calligraphic neon sign somewhere in those piles of prints and boxes of slides that I need to digitize... *sigh*
