WILDWOOD —Two new community projects are steps closer to moving from the planning phase to the construction phase.
Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. announced this week a groundbreaking will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 21, for the start of the bandshell and doo-wop museum at Fox Park, Ocean and Davis avenues.
The project will make use of the steel structure of the former Surfside Restaurant, a doo-wop property built in 1960 on the corner of Lavender and Ocean avenues in neighboring Wildwood Crest.
The angular roof and bold colors of the SurfSide were typical design features the island's many motels and other buildings built in the 1950s and 1960s.
The move to save the restaurant began in September 2002 after it was slated for demolition. Eventually, the money was raised and it was disassembled and stored.
Now, it will reappear in a new form at the park.
Troiano credited the Fox family with providing a home for the bandshell, and he thanked the Byrne family for its contribution.
Tom Byrne, a member of the board of directors of the Byrne Fund for Wildwood Inc., said the fund donated about $425,000 for the bandshell and museum.
He said such projects are part of the fund's mission to enhance the social and economic lives of the Wildwoods community.
Betty Fox, daughter-in-law of the park's namesake, Edward Z. Park, said she was thrilled to see the city adding to the park.
“I am excited. I am delighted the Byrne Fund gave so much to make this happen,” she said.
And she will be on hand for the groundbreaking. “I'll be there in my little chair,” she said Thursday.
MJJ Construction of Atco was awarded a $1.1 million contract for construction of a band shell at Fox Park across from the Wildwoods Convention Center.
