Surprise, surprise! After several days of apparent slowness or lack of much activity at the construction site for the new Doo Wop Museum and Neon Garden, I was driving down Ocean Avenue this afternoon and what to my amazement did I see? Out of the distance appeared all these strangely angled roofing beams sticking up in what used to be an open field. Drum roll: "Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" The first sure signs of life for our old friend the Surfside Restaurant. Check it out. Do you think it looks smaller than the original? I just can't tell yet. But it is so, sooooo good to see some real progress after all this time. Imagine. Finally, construction instead of demolition. Yay! Thom thom@thewildwoodsreporter.comTheWildwoodsReporter.com

It's Looking really good! I was there in Mid August & hardly anything was done yet. Does anyone know if it will be completed by October (50's weekend) I hope it is. That would make a Great Statement to have that lit up.

That would make a Great Statement to have that lit up. Probably not October, more like November. They still have to hold the big Italian Festival in the field behind the museum at the end of Sept. So I'm guessing no signs can go up until after that. Besides, I think they still have to demolish the old basketball court behind the museum yet - Thom

Is it just me or do some of the roof beams look new and some others look older?

Here is an old postcard we did for the Restaurant in the 60's. Looks about the same size as Toms pictures.

Is it just me or do some of the roof beams look new and some others look older? Remember, I reported that many of the roof beams had to be remanufactured because they had rotted out. That was supposedly the reason construction took so long to begin in the first place, getting the new beams. Seeing the post card, I guess I can see how it looks about the same size. It's true that buildings always appear bigger from inside. Maybe the lack of walls has something to so with making it appear smaller, an optical allusion or something. Anyway, it's so great to see it showing signs of life again. Thom

Here's a daytime shot that Mike (crazyaboutwildwood) posted a while back, for another comparison:

Thom, I drove by the site this morning. Came home, pulled out a postcard that I had(different one than Eric posted) of the original Surfside. It may appear smaller there since it has the tall fencing on the site. The original site was much more opened, at least that's the feeling I get from the postcards, my memory and Mike's pix.

It's so great to see retro structures being created and not destroyed. I can't wait to see the finished product. All the future neon should really light the area up at night as well. Good job Wildwood!

While we're at it, let's rebuild Castle Dracula and Hunt's Pier and Sportland and reopen the dark rides.

Great pics, when this museum is finished i think it will(in a small way) make up for some of the motels that were demolished over the last few years.

VERY small, Hulk... and since we are among the relatively few voices on the Internet making noise about Wildwoods preservation, I think we should try not to encourage that line of thinking too much But I'm sure I'll be among the early visitors when the museum finally opens. Come to think of it, we should all try to plan a forum get-together around that once we know the date.
