Thanks Marie. Nice article regarding the Caribbean, and our Motels in general. I think the gloom in parts of it more reflects things happening in 2004-05 than right now, thankfully, but we can never be too careful...

Just how hard would it be to demo the motels that are deemed "national landmarks?" Is the Caribbean the only one that fits this bill?

I'm so sick of the term "kitschy".

If you did you would have known that the Chateau Bleu, was the first to be recognized and listed by the State and National Registries. www.chateaubleu.com/re

Isn't the Caribbean quite a few years older than the Chateau Bleu?

I don't think they're far apart in age.

Thanks, re. Too bad the Gazette seems to have treated this freelance piece basically as filler--sticking it in a Saturday edition at, arguably, the worst possible time of the year to get anyone's attention, let alone do the Wildwoods any good. It's a decent "Rape of the Wildwoods 101" article that I wish the writer had pushed and/or the paper had seen fit to publish about 18 months ago. (Or better yet, back in '03 or early '04.)

The only structures that can escape demolition are National Historic Landmarks. State/local historic listings do not protect structures from demolition. As for any of the towns on this island preserving anything, they have preserved nothing. Thank the individual owners who have had the wisdom to do so.

I just got the 1958 date from the "doo wop heroes" section of this site, "Regarded as the Wildwoods' quintissential icon of Doo Wop, the Caribbean's new owners have undertaken a meticulous effort to fully restore and renovate this 1958 landmark and its unique architectural features. See www.caribbeanmotel.com"

Is WW popular in Montreal? Canada is a nice place, I was just there, not Montreal but Kingston, Toronto and Niagara Falls in Ontario. I loved the dark rides up there in Toronto and the falls. There are motels in WW called Quebec and Royal Canadian, how did they get those names? A lot of Canadians visit WW? It's going to be harder for them to come over to us when passports are required to enter the US.
