I had a rather unfortunate incident at Westy's last week.
Let me preface this story by telling you all that I have been going to Westy's for at least 5 years. Often, when I am in WW for a few days, I will go to Westy's for dinner a few nights. It was one of my favorite places. It was always a nice environment with friendly service, and it had one of the best views of the bay in North WW. Dining at Westy's had become one of my traditions, second only to renting bikes. I loved it there. That is, until this year.
On Sunday night, we went to Westy's for dinner. I led the group right up to the balcony and found us a good table with an excellent view. I ordered a sandwich and when it arrived, I got about halfway through it. Then, it happened. Every diner’s worst fear.... I slide the plate over to my boyfriend and just said "oh my God." He peeked in and told everyone at the table that there was a maggot in my food. I watched my brother and sister-in-law spit out what they were chewing. My body went numb; I was in shock.
Now, I can understand that we were outside and things happen. It was disgusting, but everyone assured me that there was no harm done and "They eat those on Fear Factor all the time”. Ok, fine, I lost my appetite, but whatever. I’ll live. The cook was outside and his "kitchen" was not too far from our table. My boyfriend called him over and showed him the maggot. The cook abruptly snatched the plate and threw it out. A few minutes later, he said to me, "Sorry, Hon" and said he would take it off of our bill. My brother told him that we all lost our appetites, wanted to leave, and were not paying for anything. The cook went crazy. He became argumentative and got in my brother’s face. At this point, I am crying out of complete horror. The maggot was bad, but the situation was only made worse by the cook's arrogance. He threatened to call the cops if we did not pay. My brother told him to go ahead and call the cops because he wanted to tell them that Westy's was serving maggots. The commotion caused by the cook had gained the attention of the other patrons. Finally, my brother finally went downstairs and got the owner. He was much more reasonable and told us not to worry about the bill. I missed all of that because I was in the parking lot throwing up. The next day, we contacted the Board of Health.
I have never had such an unpleasant situation happen to me. There I was, in my most favorite place in the world, and this happened and ruined my night. I felt compelled to share this with all of you. Perhaps, some of you have had similar experiences, but I also want to forewarn anyone that may be in North Wildwood and hungry. Try the Angelsea Pub instead. Or, go for a slice at Mack’s or Sam’s.
I can’t help but think that if the situation was handled more delicately, then I probably would not have even mentioned it. As it stands, I will never again go to Westy’s.
