Admit it. You all have "Wildwood" CD's. You know, a mix of songs that you can listen to on the way to Cape May (pun intended).
In honor of the opening weekend of the season, tell us, What's on your Wildwood CD?
Here's my list: "On the Way to Cape May" Al Alberts & Cozy's version "Wildwood Days" "Summer Wind" Frank Sinatra "Under the Boardwalk" "Sittin on the Dock of the Bay" (Wasting Time) "Margaritaville" "Summer Nights" (from Grease) "The Twist" "Surfin USA" "Goin on a Holiday" (Twisting by the pool) "Beyond the Sea" "Hazy, Crazy, Lazy Days of Summer" "See You in September"

This is really cool, Cindy.
I've always wanted to put together a Wildwood CD, but to be honest, I'm just too lazy.
Sadly, we usually wind up just playing the radio on the way down.
Well, I do always have my Springsteen CDs in the car, so that's always handy. I like blastin' the Boss while flying down Rt. 73.
Oh, and this is something my brother and I started doing a while back... You know the Parkway exit that wheels around that long ramp and deposits you on North Wildwood Boulevard?
Well, we always key up and play Tom Petty's "Kings Highway" right when we make that turn. It's a very apropo tune as you're heading over the bridge, across the bay and onto the island.

very cool. We listen to the radio. Usually get happy when we lose our Philly stations on 47 and we get the shore stations:)

Wow, Cindy. This is a great topic.
Two years ago I made a Wildwood CD and gave one to each of my extended family when we met down Wildwood for our yearly vacation there. (This year will be 35 years in a row). The songs are total 1980s, since that's when most of us in our family were kids/teens. So if that era gives anybody a rash, read no further. But if you were on the boards in the 80's maybe you'll remember some of these providing the soundtrack. Here's part of the note that went into each CD case:
"First off, this is not a “Best Of” collection. Instead, this is a collection – certainly incomplete – of what I can only call Wildwood Music: a partial soundtrack from our more than 30 summers in the trenches.
Music was, and is, everywhere in Wildwood. Thousands of songs are locked in hand to hand combat from one end of the island to the other. Every shop, pier, ride, restaurant, car, and beach blanket blares its own music as if no other sound ever existed. And as this town does with everything else, it displays a staggering lack of discretion when it comes to exactly what makes it to the top. Anything and everything – from Cozy Morley to The Clash – has been welcomed with open arms. And once the City By The Sea takes you under its wing, well, then you a made man, baby. Indeed, the reign of some of these songs was like being stuck in an elevator with a gorilla. You just couldn’t get away. (Ghostbusters, anyone?)
Wafting out of the just-opening t-shirt shops on the walk back from breakfast or floating through the chlorinated breeze while we shivered in line on the steps of the Wet-N-Wild, these songs formed the backdrop for the week you had to make last all year. Hyperalert, hyperactive, and on complete sensory overload we soaked in everything we could, consciously or not. At first, some of these songs may not look familiar, but they’re all old friends.
Some of these songs I recognized as being “Wildwood” only years later. Something would be oddly familiar about a song I knew I’d never consciously heard before. Then suddenly I’d remember it coming from the booth of some kid begging me to throw darts at the wall of gently swaying balloons behind him or remember hearing it on the beach, crackling in all its mono glory from the transistor radio of the guy with the pack of Marlboro Reds stuck in his cutoff jeans.
Others simply refused to die, but instead tumbled headlong into the Shore Warp, a phenomena observed in patches along the boards where time and space stood still for years on end. (For an entire decade, riding The Sea Dragon on Morey’s meant being pummelled by Kool & The Gang’s “Celebration”.)
Some of these songs are so evocative, so of that time, they make me want to cry every time I hear them. While some of them just plain stink. I’ll say it. They stunk then and they stink now. But they stunk in Wildwood, so they’re OUR stink.
So here they are: the good the bad and the ugly. And they’ve got only one thing in common: they were here when we were here."
Don't You Want Me - The Human League Electric Avenue - Eddy Grant Heat of the Moment - Asia It's Still Rock 'n Roll to Me - Billy Joel Hit Me with Your Best Shot - Pat Benatar Down Under - Men At Work Girls Just Want to Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper (Keep Feeling) Fascination - The Human League Jump (For My Love) - The Pointer Sisters Africa - Toto Smokin' - Boston Ghostbusters - Ray Parker Jr. You Spin Me 'Round (Like a Record) - Dead Or Alive Separate Ways - Journey What's Love Got to Do With It - Tina Turner Rock the Casbah - The Clash Celebration - Kool & The Gang

Excellent point, Red Eye! I hear a few songs now and again on the radio that take me back to the WW of the 80s.
* Things Can Only Get Better - Howard Jones * I Can't Go for That (No Can Do) - Hall & Oates
I want a copy of your CD. It is awesome!

This is a really great thread, bringing back a wave of emotions for sure.
It's really neat how our collective Wildwood experiences have been (and are still) influenced by the music of the time, the music we grew up with.
And, sometimes, it's the music and the songs that you haven't even thought about for years that jog your memory and get you thinking about a time long, long ago.
Redeye (How are you doing by the way?), you mentioned "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker, Jr. Wow, did that bring back memories. I'll never forget my mom taking me to see that movie at the Strand during the summer of 1984.
Any kid growing up during the mid-80s will know instantly the rage that was "Ghostbusters," and the nostaligic feelings still associated with it. I have very similar emotions attached to "Back to the Future," which was released the following summer.
That movie, of course (which is just brimmng with 50s nostaliga, obviously), instantly brings to mind "Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News. Oh, how I used to fantisize about flying up and down the Wildwood Boardwalk on my skateboard to the sounds of that tune!
It's all great nostaliga... thanks for this thread, Cindy.
I think I might actually be inspired enough to finally sit down and put together some sort of compilation Wildwood CD after all this time.
