I love these.. Theres something that has not changed since I was a kid. We sit on the beach and read em as they go by. Being an Engineer I notice that these older small engined planes when towing a banner into a strong headwind are traveling very slow.. Ill bet some as going as slow as 55-65 mph, which is slow for a plane..

Frank, those banners are as much a part of the Wildwood scene as the Tramcar. Here's a link to a local company that's been doing it since 1945. www.paramountair.com/index.htmre

I like the planes with the ads too. I seem to remember a few marriage proposals over the years.

I believe those planes are commonplace almost anywhere along The Jersey Shore and have been for years.

Those planes really add to the summertime aura on the beach. They are an aspect of the shore that I generally don’t think about until I see them, but there are very iconic in their own way.
Thanks for reminding me of another great aspect of the Wildwoods (and the Jersey Shore in general), Frank!
My personal favorite Wildwood beach icon is the Fudgy Wudgy Man. To this day, I cannot resist.
My mom has plenty of old photos of me as an toddler on the beach, smeared in chocolate and sand. Ah, the things I have to look forward to with my own son!

A few years back, while sitting on the beach, I saw the Fudgy Wudgy Man approaching, and a rush of nostalgia washed over me.
When he got closer, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The FWM in this instance turned out to be a second cousin of mine (three years younger) who was living in North Wildwood for the summer and making some extra bucks in the a.m. hours.
I didn’t even realize that he was down for the summer. So, it was a complete and total surprise to run in to him in the first place, let alone in the guise of the legendary FWM!
Frank posted a few days back about how the “magic” of certain things from your childhood tend to wear away as the years go by.
Geez, this was one of those specific instances where that happened instantaneously. Seriously, as a kid, the FWM was almost a mythic figure to me. I know that might sound ridiculous, but he was!
As time passed, I obviously viewed him on a much less lofty pedestal, but the FWM remained a true Wildwood icon to me nonetheless.
Seeing my punk, 20-year old cousin as the FWM, though, just brought the whole thing to a crashing halt. In a rather amusing sense that is.
It was kind of like finding out that Santa is real after all these years, but discovering that he was just your inebriated, jobless Uncle Larry in a fat suit all along.
It’s funny how time changes perception sometimes.

That's a great idea. Maybe we could take up a collection and place some ads on the planes against demolition, mention the league, etc.
