Im starting to see less old landmarks down there! Went down today and you all know that it isnt looking like the wildwood we once knew! I have noticed the motel martinique and lounge is now gone. The motel part hasnt been ope for a couple of years and the bar was a real dive but I still dont want to see anymore condos.

I knew the Martinique was going...didn't know it was history tho..that's sad..I used to work the graveyard shift at the Red Oak..and when it was really slow before the Clubs let out...my boss would let a few of us go down for a drink and a dance or two. The Bouncers let us in, and the bartenders gave us free drinks...*sigh* ah the good old days. I worked there when the fire at the Starlight Ballroom happened...man,talk about some sad people coming in late that night/morning..smelling of smoke and wondering if they still had a business on the Boards.

As I mentioned a few times before, it is definitely going to be a jolting eye-opener for many people when they head down to the Wildwoods for the first time this season.
Things are changing, for sure. The question is, how far will it go?
I’m an optimist, probably to a fault. But, I feel it’s the only way to be. Thus, I’m holding out hope that the Wildwoods, despite losing many of their beloved landmarks, are entering into a very exciting period.
It’s sad to see so many classic Doo Wop motels and structures go, but the island has proven the ability to “reinvent” itself many times over.
Good things are on the horizon. They will be appreciated all the more once this past offseason starts to descend from view in our collective rear view mirrors.

That looonng Demolition List on the DWPL's main site is pretty sickening though. I agree that the list needs to be there, but's it's just sad.

Al:
I agree. But the past off-season is tied to the upcoming season and next season might be worse before it becomes better IMO.
It's those next off season's that will bring more and more demolishing of these buildings as long as this booming trend continues and there is BIG money being exchanged...And that's something to worry about because you know it's inevitable that at least a dozen or so more motels will surely vanish if something is not done ASAP to hinder that sad reality.
I do applaud your optimism greatly by the way! But I guess if you lived down here you would eventually find it difficult to maintain that optimism when all that demolition and construction is too close to be ignored because it's all around you.

I feel like I will be in for an awakening when I go there this summer after hearing and seeing the changes. I miss seeing some of the landmarks that are now no longer there. I have not been down there since 1999. It is my understanding that The Sands in the Crest is closing down and being demonolished for what else -- more condos. I don't if that is a rumor or not. I have stayed there several times with friends and it was a decent place to stay but heard different opinions about it --some liked it some did not. I have to say though the last time I stayed there (1999), it was kind of going down hill but it was tolerable.
Condos are nice but that is not how I remember Wildwood. They are ruining the nostalia of Wildwood. I like the old time style motels, they have some character which you don't see anymore -- and I am only 37.
