I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any books on The Wildwoods containing a history of the towns, motels/hotels from the past to the present, etc.? I have always had an interest in how towns got started and how they grew over the years.

Yeah there's a couple of them. Go to amazon.com and type in Wildwood, a bunch will pop up. There's one of those "Images of America" series books and one just called Wildwood. Also, a good pick up is "Amusement Parks of new Jersey" which gives a history of most operatinf amusement parks in NJ (Morey's having a large section).

bono715:
The best and most recent book is probably WILDWOOD BY-THE-SEA by Robert Scully Sr., David Francis, and Diane DeMali Francis originally published in 1998 by AP (Amusement Park) Books Inc.
The book was, until recently, generally considered out of print. The Wildwood Historical Society, however, recently received a solid donation to have extra but limited copies printed for sale at the Historical Society and still might be available for purchase through them.

Yeah I got my copy the year it came out. It is a great book and it is sitting right next to me and my computer! bono715: The best and most recent book is probably WILDWOOD BY-THE-SEA by Robert Scully Sr., David Francis, and Diane DeMali Francis originally published in 1998 by AP (Amusement Park) Books Inc. I do know that my sister recently bought a book that came out last year I believe is called THE JERSEY SHORE EXPERIENCE or something close to that...It's pretty entertaining and captures life along The Jersey Shore perfectly. The book is about the size of the WILDWOOD BY THE SEA book. Let me see if I can get the correct title for you sometime today.

Wildwood by the Sea is excellent. I'm gonna describe a different book for you, however.
Sort of a different kind of book that what you're looking for, but this is as good a place as any to recommend the book "Pride" by William Wharton to the readers of this forum. Pride is a work of fiction mostly set in Wildwood in the 1930s. The author took a true event and spun a very interesting fictional story out of it. In 1937 (I think), a lion which served as a boardwalk attraction attacked and killed a tourist. Wharton (author's pen name) takes this actual event and puts together an interesting work of fiction, that certainly gives some insight to the boardwalk way back when, even if fictional. The book is not my favorite, it has its weaknesses. But if you enjoy reading about Wildwood, you'll like this book. Wharton also wrote "Birdy," which was made into a movie in the 1980s (so a few may remember it).

The previous book that I mentioned is correctly entitled THE JERSEY SHORE UNCOVERED: A REVEALING SEASON ON THE JERSEY SHORE by Peter Genovese.

Not familiar with the Wharton book, but thanks.
I agree with Anthony - Peter Genovese's Jersey Shore book is excellent. I met him at a book fair last fall when a friend was selling his books there. At the time I didn't know of Peter's book. We talked a little and he really seemed to love the Wildwoods. Reading his book confirmed it. He even devoted a chapter to the Boardwalk Chapel.

Crazyaboutwildwood: Thanks for the suggestion. In fact that is the exact book (Wildwood by the Sea) I wanted but I checked Amazon.com and it said it is currently unavailable. I don't know where else to buy it. Since it is a 1998 edition, it is probably out of print by now(?).

You should be able to still purchase the WILDWOOD BY THE SEA book from the Boyer Museum, aka the Historical Society Anthony mentioned above (what happened to Anthony becoming a "guest" here?).

When someone deletes their screen name...all their old posts are listed as a guest. That's what happened to devil and church lady. Maybe Anthony finally got fed up and gave up on this board. I think Sandy pushed him over the edge. Real shame.
