where was this at? The Mediterranean Motel is actually still standing. It's at 405 Ocean Ave. in North WW. I believe it was a condo conversion for last season, but the property looks very nice and is very well kept. The neon sign still glows brightly at night. For some reason, this little area of North Wildwood (essentially the few blocks to the west of the big beachfront motels between roughly 2nd and 6th Aves.) tend to get overlooked quite a bit. Also in this area are the Isle of Capri and Jade East, two real gems that deserve more recognition than they get.

Pretty sure the Milano is still standing, but not for long. It is located at the southeast corner of Atlantic & Taylor, right next to the Starlux. I believe this small building is going to be demolished as part of the Nouveau Wave Hotel construction. Not sure whether it's operating this year or not.

I have to scan a great shot of the Jade East. It's picture taken from the balcony out towards the ocean and there is nothing near it, just empty lots. No Acropolis, no Aloha, no A Shore View and no homes.

No Acropolis, no Aloha, no A Shore View and no homes. Wow, that sounds really cool, Eric! The owners of the Jade East take a great deal of pride in their property. Last year, they had some renovations done, including a complete refurbishment of their roadside sign. I ventured into the motel's office in late August, just to compliment the owners on how nice the place looks. The woman behind the counter was very, very nice and engaged me in a very interesting conversation for a bit. She told me that she knew that the Jade East was one of the older motels in the area, but she wasn't sure of the exact date it opened at that time.

That was going to be my next question, when was the Jade East built. The area around it was completely empty. I will look thru the other pictures to see if any have cars & post, so someone can date them.

I believe this small building is going to be demolished as part of the Nouveau Wave Hotel construction. Not sure whether it's operating this year or not. Al, I need to correct this: The Milano, as of last notice, WAS NOT part of the Nouveau Wave project. The owner was naturally quite upset when she read this in my story. The information came from an honest mistatement by the developers at the Zoning Board meeting when they said they had recently purchased "the final available property on that block as part of the Nouveau Wave project." Everyone in the world thought it must have been the Milano since the only other properties on the block seemed to be the Milano and the Starlux, and the Starlux wasn't going anywhere. If not the Starlux, it must have been the Milano, huh? Nothing else seemed to be on that block. What the developers were talking about was an available approximately 10-foot-wide strip of land between the Nouveau Wave property line and the Milano. It was only a "paper" property, not the Milano itself. As far as I know, the Milano is still open for business and I haven't heard of her selling out to the developers yet. However, when the Nouveau Wave does get built, the Milano is going to become like that famous little building in AC that refused to sell to the giant casino. The Milano will seem like a tiny speck, stuck in the corner between the Nouveau and the Starlux. Thom

Thanks for the clarification, Thom!
I don't know, I would think the developers would have chosen their words a bit more carefully when announcing that they had purchased the "final" available property on that block as part of the Nouveau Wave project.
I'm also pretty sure everyone would have assumed that the Rio and Milano were the only two entities on the Taylor Ave. side of that city square. Perhaps they should have realized that the existence of a "paper" property (let alone a lousy 10-ft. strip of land) would cause some confusion.
As it did.
Anyway, while I do remember this bit from your Nouveau Wave story a while back, I was actually "informed" of the potential demise of the Milano as part of the Nouveau project recently by two gentlemen at the Ocean Cafe.
They were not workers, just guys who seemed like regulars in the diner having coffee one morning. They seemed to know what they were talking about (this was just about two weeks ago), but I guess you never know.
As for the Milano (and even the Starlux) being completely dwarfed by the Nouveau Wave, yeah, it's going to be quite the visual!
It's always neat to see little places like the Milano hold out. I guess time will tell how long the owner(s) decide to stick around.

Geez, I almost forgot what the Hialeah looked like before it was painted up in different colors as the "New" Carousel. Interesting also, a small portion of the Tangiers Motel's sign is visible on the right. Looks like it was painted pink at the time, as opposed to the blue it sports today. I'm guessing this was taken roughly 4-5 years ago or so.
