The Island Motel is still there, but it's been closed for years. Neat little place. I *think* people live there, and also have a plumbing/electrical or some sort of service business under the Island name, right down to the font/style from the sign of the Island. Recently, it looked to me like some improvements were being made to the Island - I saw what seemed like new windows installed. I don't know if that means they may reopen the Motel, or they're just fixing it up for themselves.

The DiLido was Stockton & Atlantic.
New Carousel was 2005 only.

It's in such a high-profile location, right at Park & Rio Grande Aves., that I would think something more could or would have been done with the place. I have also noticed some renovations over the past two years or so, as well as the white van that sits out front. I wonder if folks do live there, or if they just use it for offices, space for the business, etc. I always mean to go back and look at my pictures of the place to get the phone number that is painted on the side of that van. When I do, I'll give them a call and try to get some more info. Very cool looking place, though. I love the neon sign on top, and hope to see it lit one day.

The DiLido was Stockton & Atlantic. New Carousel was 2005 only. The DiLido/Dunes was probably overlooked quite a bit because it was situated right in the heart of the motel district in the Crest for so many years. It was right next to the Casa Bahama also, which was, of course, one of the eye-catchers on Atlantic Ave. in that area. The Dunes was a neat little place, though. It had a unique "velvet" color scheme (not too different from the Monaco in Wildwood proper), zig-zaggy roof lines and was illuminated by multi-colored spaceship lights at night. For some reason, I'm pretty sure that the owner of the Hialeah painted the motel in multiple colors ala the original Carousel back in 2004. I guess he was just trying to "theme" his motels similarly. And, of course, as Martin mentioned, the Hialeah actually became the "New" Carousel in '05, after the original was demolished. And now, the Hialeah itself is gone. Does anyone have an update on construction on the former site at this time?

There is costruction going on at the Hialeah site. I'm not sure about the original Carousel site.

...and the "New Carousel"/Hialeah site is currently a wasteland, with only the small box sign left to note what was there last year.

Yes - that picture only shows about 1/2 of the front of the Island Motel - the pool is by the other part of the front not shown in the picture.

The site of the Hialeah/Carousel is in fact nothing but a wasteland. I know that many of you have been documenting these places for a few years, and I myself have been doing this only about a year or so, but it is so sad to me. To see such a vibrant place as the new Carousel, not remembering the old very well, and then on Monday driving by and seeing the emptiness....even though i took photos all throughout its demise, it still is very hard to swallow.

It is probably safe to say then the Hialeah lot will sit vacant for the summer a la the Packard last year.
