Riding my bike down Pacific Avenue I noticed the beautiful old, Wildwood High School. What year was it built? It probably has a long history and if anyone has any info please let me know.

and is wildwood hs a regoinal hs, or do ww, the crest and Nww all have their own high schools. I know lower cape may is a pretty big hs. As a graduate of WHS in 1969, and my mother would have graduated about 1952 if I hadn't been born (back then, unwed mothers didn't continue in school, they "disappeared" for several months to avoid the so-called stigma of the time). Boy, that sentence is kind of strange, I'd better start over: I think WHS might have been built in 1916, but there are two different cornerstones on the building if I remember correctly, with 1916 the oldest. The newer cornerstone (1928? ?) may have been for an addition, just guessing. I know the press box at Maxwell Field says it was donated by the Class of 1916. WHS isn't what would be called a regional school like Lower Cape May Regional, I don't think. There are only two H.S.'s on the island, Wildwood High and Wildwood Catholic. All the kids from the elementary schools in NW, WW, WWW, and WC either go on to Wildwood or Wildwood Catholic. Hope this helps - Thom P.S. Class sizes at WHS have always been pretty small. My graduating class averaged less than 50 or so kids, I'd have to drag out the year book to be sure. ANd all the kids were mostly together from K through 12.

Thanks for the info Thom. Because of the difference in the # of students I would guess ww high does not play Lower cape may in any sports. I am guessing ww would be considered a group 1 school and LCM would be a 3 or 4.

I am guessing ww would be considered a group 1 school and LCM would be a 3 or 4. No, some of the greatest local rivalries have been between Cape May COunty schools. Wildwood always played Wildwood Catholic in basketball. Catholic has no football team. We also always played Middle Twp, Lower Cape May Regional, Pleasantville, Mainland Regional, etc. Wildwood High is just beginning to get their football program back together after a few down years. Back in the 50's and 60''s WHS had several really great teams, winning titles in basketball and football. The current mayor, Ernie Troiano was a star on the varsity basketball team in the late 60's. We also had a couple of big-time stars back then. Randy Beverly was an all-state football player who went on to play pro football with the NY Jets. When the Jets and Joe Namath won the super bowl that year, Randy Beverly caught two really big-time interceptions, at least one in the end zone, which helped the jets win the title. The varsity basketball team in the late 60's also included Reynolds Chamberlain, Wilt Chamberlain's nephew, who was almost as good as his famous uncle. Don't know what happened to Reynolds later in life. And of course, most famous for this area of all the local stars was a certain tall and good looking fellow who lived in Whitesboro and played basketball for Middle Township. You might recognize his name since he tends to hang out with a certain lady named Oprah - That's right, Steadman Graham played for Middle. I think he also graduated in 1969. Thom

Interesting stuff Thom, I didn't know Randy Beverly grew up in WW. Did ww ever have any state champs in wrestling? I know they had a couple of kids from lower cape may in the states last year.
