Greetings everyone. It's been a while since I signed onto the site and was really happy to see this forum has been completed. It's great to read all of your comments regarding a place that is really in our blood. I have a 44 year history in Wildwood, particularly in Crest (near stockton ave.) have had the most incredable memories, and share your great passion for town as well. I enjoy talking about the old days and trivia, mostly from the mid sixtys to present time. I'm going to throw a few trivia questions out in misc section to see if anyone remenbers. Talk to you soon. bb

Welcome, beachboy! It’s great to have you here, and I look forward to seeing your trivia posts and sharing in your knowledge of the Wildwoods. P.S. – Near Stockton Road in the Crest, huh? Ever stay at the Bonanza, Astronaut or Swan…?

Hello Al:
Very nice to be here. I've really enjoyed all of your chat. Actually, after staying a places like gold crest, diamond, crest and jolly roger as young boy, we purchased a small condo conversion on stockton road in 1990. This was during the first wave of condo conversions, It was right next door to the evening star motel, we have since sold it and now hang out at the Jolly roger.

Thanks, beachboy!
I continue to hear nothing but really good things about the Jolly Roger (and all of the other Morey-owned properties, for that matter). Definitely a place I will strongly consider bringing my family to this summer.
I am not too familiar with the Evening Star Motel... Does it still exist, in some form?. Also, do you happen to know when it was built/demolished, or any other info on it?

Thanks Al:
The jolly roger has a great package where you get free breakfast everyday at the port royal, another Morey hotel. It's a great way to start the day, in their beautiful coffee shop overlooking the bike path and beach. They also give 1 free dinner per adult per stay at great restaurants. I believe it's the best package in WW. The other good thing about the JR is the pool area. As you know, it's a u shaped building so the pool is in a courtyard, no wind ,very privstr. and you get great sun most of the day. The kids love it. There is no beach view, however, there's a great view of the port royal hotel from you pool chair.
The evening star is on the corner of pacific and stockton. A very small motel, almost hidden, interesting ,because they built a motel style building in a residential neighborhood. I believe it is still there as a condo conversion. I',mnot sure when it was built. One of the places we stayed frequently was next door to it. An apartment which used to be called Ken- Crest. It is parallel to pacific ave. Can you believe we had to bring our own TV back then. They had an antenna in the yard and you received, maybe 3 channels,

When it was built (probably in the late '50s or early '60s) the JOLLY ROGER was beachfront when there was no Atlantic Avenue yet! In fact, this was especialy common for most of the motels built over on Ocean Ave (on the side where the Carousel was located) as well. You couldn't build any closer to the beach in the '50s!
All that stood where Port Royal stands today - when Jolly Roger was first opened - was a small playground and basketball court where the beach began.
Another good thing about Jolly Roger is that the sun usually beats down on the pool ALL DAY in the summer months so the water is hardly ever chilly!
Great Place to stay for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great info: especially about the basketball and playground where the port royal is... didn't know that... thanks much!!! Also very true about the sun at the JR. The water is always great. In the northern facing motels, you lose the sun in the pool area early especially in August. Due to the u shape of the JR, it seems like the sun never goes down. The benefits of having a whole block to build on but they built a very nice place that more than holds its own today!!
