TEXTHi Everyone!! I have been reading this forum for awhile now and thought I was about time to join it. I have been coming to Wildwood every summer since I was a little girl. My parents used to take us kids camping every summer. For the past 13 years I have stayed at The Rio Motel but...not anymore. I can't believe that all these hotels are being turn down. It makes me so sad.

Welcome aboard, firemansgirl!
As you've most likely already discovered, there are some great people here and some excellent Wildwood-based and preservationalist discussion to enjoy and take part in.
It is really a shame about the Rio. Another true icon lost to this unfortunate condo craze. I was down in Wildwood on Wednesday and watched as workers continued to prepare the Rio for demolition (actually, I was kind of surprised to see it still standing at all).
Such a shame. I can only hope that the new highrise, Doo Wop-inspired hotel that will take its place (the Nouveau Wave Hotel) will be successful, and prove to be a valuable new entity for the Wildwoods.
So, you've stayed at the Rio for the past 13 years, huh? Any ideas on where you might be staying this year (assuming that you will be coming down, of course).
At any rate, welcome once again. It's great to have you here!

Al,
I'm wondering what ever became of the little South of the Border figurine mascot that used to adorn the Rio Motel?
Do you know the little fellow I'm talking about? I think there was a donkey as well.

Anthony,
I've actually heard conflicting rumors on what happened to the sombrero guy and his donkey.
The president of the Crest Historical Society (Kirk Hastings) told me that he inquired about it, but was told (presumably by the former owners of the Rio) that the Boyer Museum had first dibs on it.
I talked to two volunteers at the Boyer Museum, however, and they told me that they did not gain possession of the statues. Instead, they had heard that a group of former longtime vacationers at the Rio had gotten together and purchased the statue during the motel's pre-demolition contents sale.
However, I had the opportunity to ask a former Rio employee about it recently (within the past month) and he told me that he was fairly certain that the statues were indeed donated to the Boyer Museum, and that perhaps they were being stored somewhere because the museum is out of room.
I really need to speak to Mr. Bright or someone else at the Boyer Museum in person. I'm sure someone knows the whereabouts of the little guy!

Good to see an additional participant when they can! Welcome! When AP gets restored again, I will be up that way however, I will still go to Wildwood!

It's great to have you here! We will be staying at the Tropicana Hotel this year...We aren't coming down until September though for the Fireman's convention. Any comments on the Tropicana?

Interesting that you should mention the Tropicana, as it seems to be the recipient of a fairly large renovation project itself at the current time.
Not exactly sure what is being done, but I do remember seeing various concept sketches of a total, neo Doo Wop overhaul for this motel in the past.
Definitely worth keeping an eye on. Perhaps some of our resident Wildwoodians can give us an update on what's going on with the Tropicana if they get the chance.
As for the quality and service of the motel itself, I've always heard good things. I know you'll miss the Rio, but you should be in good hands with the Tropicana...

DJAndy:
Good to know that you're anxious for the once legendary Asbury Park to finally get going as a resort community...It'll be quite some time before it gets to the point where people will accept it as a sore destination since there is still a lot of work that needs to be done.
I have no doubts that Asbury Park's time once again as a decent Jersey Shore resort town will surely arrive sooner or later. Any changes they have made or will make will be better than what's been allowed to happen down there over the last 35 years.

Thanks for the update Al...I really appreciate it. It's going to be hard coming down there and not seeing some of the hotels that have been around for ages.
