Hey Everyone,
Realized I never actually did formally introduce myself to the group, so I think its about time I take that opportunity...
For those who do not know me, I'm part of the DWPL's advisory board, and serve as the league's webmaster/designer and assistant in PR/Communications efforts.
As my little tagline states, I'm the self-proclaimed "baby" of the DWPL (although I see we do have several other younger people posting here these days, which is always good to see)... I'm 23 years old, from New York City, recent graduate of New York University, currently work in website/graphic design and have also worked in the general area of marketing & communications in NYC, so of course one of my primary roles and interests with the DWPL is to help with efforts to communicate our message and vision, with the website being one of our most important projects.
I've been coming to Wildwood since I was 5 years old... You'll find me hanging out at the Cara Mara in Wildwood Crest where my father is one of the owners... we've been involved there since 1987 as part of the group that originally converted the Cara Mara to a condo-motel and we're now doing our best to make some renovations in the spirit of Doo Wop...
On the one hand, I'll always love the same things I loved about Wildwood as a kid... the beach, the boardwalk, the roller coasters, and driving around looking at all the motels lit up at night... But I also remember when Wildwood seemed to be going nowhere but downhill and I always hoped for the day that the town would be brought back to its glory days...
First learning of the DWPL's and Steve Izenour's vision for a Wildwood revival based on restoring and reviving all the classic motels and really making a virtue of our "Doo Wop" identity was what got me truly excited about the future of Wildwood... it's also led to my huge interest in the topic of '50s architecture and mid-century pop culture in general... Needless to say, it has been quite painful to watch what has been taking place here recently... we are quickly forgetting that the Doo Wop motels were a huge part of all the renewed interest and publicity Wildwood started to recieve around the world in recent years... if we suddenly lose all these buildings now, we are essentially ridding ourselves of the very basis of this town's revival before it ever had the chance to reach its full potential...
But... challenging as it may be... I try my best to remain optimistic as there are still some good things happening, and the more support we can generate on this board and abroad, the better our chances at success will be...
