In one way it's free because we don't have to pay the Hospital for the treatment or have insurance.
National Insurance which is taken out of our salaries covers a lot of things and goes to the Government. Out of this money is a fund for the Health Service which covers all Hospitals, some Dentists, Opticians, basically anything to do with a persons health. So in a way we do pay for our health treatment, but we don't pay as much as you do over there. We do have private Hospitals where you can pay into a health scheme, just like your Insurance, any treatment is paid for out of the scheme you've been contributing to.
Also out of the National Insurance a small amount of that weeks contribution is put into your personal fund for your National Pension. This is paid to you on a weekly basis when a man retires from work at 65yrs old and a woman at 60yrs old. You can also take out a contributory scheme to increase your pension, this is paid alongside your National Pension payments.
I hope i've made that as clear as I can momto2, it confuses me sometimes lol. ;D
If it's not too clear, feel free to ask me to clarify anything for you.
Take care.
