Hi, I just wanted to say how happy I am to find this forum. I have been going Wildwood since 1972 with my family, I was four years old then. I am now a mom of three and every summer my parents and my husband kids go down. Well, almost every summer. We missed the last two years. Two summers ago we were supposed to go down and stay at the Palm Crest. We had it all set up but my father suffered a stroke that May. Thankfully he survived and is doing quite well now. But, it was a long recovery. It took up a lot of that summer. He really loves Wildwood and we are supposed to return this coming July. Last year we vacationed in the Outer Banks of North Carolina with my husband's family. It was nice but it was no Wildwood. His family doesn't do whole family vacations much, so that was a big family get together that we had to attend.
Anyway, back to Wildwood. I think it is really cool that everybody has there own little Wildwood stories and nostalgia that is part of them. It is definitely part of me. We were going to stay at the Palm Crest again, but since it is now March we began checking and that's when I started finding out about all the motels that are gone. Back in 03 when I was there last, I knew it was changing, but I didn't expect this much.
Through the years I remember staying at the Palm Crest, Surf Lane, Lollipop, (always loved those doors!), Martinique, the Magnolia and the Kings Inn. The first place we ever stayed was the Elmwood Apts., but I don't even remember where that was, I just remember the name.
It's like as soon as you go over the Rio Grande bridge, it's like you stepped into another world. As a kid, I remember thinking this must be the best place on earth to live. You know, being a kid I thought if you lived there it was one long vacation, not realizing you would have to work to survive. Ah, youth. Even back then when I was little, I enjoyed going out to eat with my family. I remember the Wildwood Diner back in the 70's and 80's. My dad particularly likes the Red Oak. We all like the Vegas Diner. On one night we go all out and hit Shcellengers. Uncle Lou's we always ate at back in the day when it was open for dinner. Then we did the breakfast thing there when it was just breakfast. I guess now it's nothing. We just discovered Zabarer's the year before it closed, Wish we would have found that sooner. On our last morning there we always used to have breakfast at Mama Leoni's, and then hit Laura's Fudge for some take home treats and then head home. That was always sad. leaving. After Mama Leoni's closed, we used to eat at the Hitching Post or the Dolphin, but they are also gone now. While I am on the subject of food, I always loved Nate's hot dogs on the boardwalk.
On to the Boardwalk, wow, what great memories. My early year's I remember standing outside of the Haunted House on Morey's Pier watching people get the bejeezez scared out of them. I always loved the Nugget and the Pirate Ship on Hunt's. Oh yes, I can't forget about the Keystone Kops. Back in those days, I believe the 5 piers were Sportland, Hunt's, Morey's, Marine and Fun Pier. Correct me if I am wrong. My dad always liked the ski ride on Fun Pier. That's what he called it. It was those sky car things.
I am looking forward to returning this year. I don't know where we will stay yet, but we will be there. Peace everybody.
