I was there too. Had a good long weekend - I got in on Thursday. I thought the cars were overall better last year, but was still glad I went. I took pictures - I haven't bought a digital camera yet, so I need to have these developed and discs made...

Yeah, the loss of the "muffler-rappin' and flame-throwin' burnout is hurting the organization. A lot has been lost with this event IMO recently ever since the sad passing a few years ago of Dave Sutton, who many considered the driving force (no pun intended), behind the NJHRA. Dave was a powerful influence and was probably the main factor for the hot rods and later the monster trucks coming to Wildwood. But the city(s) decided that the burnouts were doing too much damage to the streets (that the city(s) couldn't afford to fix after every event). And also, the burnouts, I'm guessing, were probably responsible for drawing the rowdier crowd that the city and the event didn't want (Not the event participants, but the outsiders and "looky-loos" who just came to watch, get drunk, and get radical). Remember last time how the city said if it happened again, the event could have been cancelled. Dave Sutton, bless him, would not have put up with that crowd. In my experience when I was coordinating these events in the early 90's, Dave always seemed to get people to do what he needed them to do. Thom P.S. I'll have two complete pages in tomorrow's Wildwoods Reporter of the cars on the boardwalk. Check it out! www.TheWildwoodsReporter.com

I noticed the other day when looking over the Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce's events calendar that the blurb for the car show just ended says: " ...Evening cruise, muffler rappin’, flame throwin’, burn-out competitions." www.gwcoc.org/thismonthsevents.html#sepIf participants weren't supposed to do burnouts, somebody needed to tell the GWCOC. Or, at least, its webmaster. I'm curious... did the format of the show actually change this year to eliminate the burnouts? Or was it only burnouts by nonpaying spectators that officials meant to discourage?

What other places have done to stop the damage to the asphalt is to put down a steel plate and wet it.. for the burnouts..

Or was it only burnouts by nonpaying spectators that officials meant to discourage? I didn't attend every event but I remember the city saying a while back that the burnouts wouldn't be held. Flynn, The metal plate seems like a good idea but in the beginning they were wetting down the parking lot across from the old Rio Motel and there were obviously streaks all over the lot. later, they moved it to a section of Surf Avenue and north Wildwood freaked out when they saw the results to the street after the event. Plus they weren't too happy about all the extracurricular burnouts on the other streets by outside drunks and some non-participants actually entering the burnout course without warning or permission, burning out, and then taking off in a cloud of smoke. For a while in the beginning it was something. I personally always thought the event wasn't the problem of the NJHRA. It was more of a police problem. The troublemakers should have just been chased down and dealt with severely. I even suggested at the time that they issue a HUGE event-only fine for violaters and/or confiscate the outsider's cars and make them pay to get them back. I guarantee they'd get the message real quick. But I was told those things couldn't be done. Thom

I do believe that Dave Sutton had the show very organized. But back then most who brought a car participated. Now there are a lot of cars that do not participate, some not all that do not participate think it is a boozin weekend and they own the town, which IMO makes it hard on the NJHRA. It is those AHOLES that are going to ruin it for the rest of us that enjoy the show and know how to act like responsible adults. Nothing wrong with a few drinks and a good time but know your limits.

I just got back as well--my first car show vacation. Except for being woken up at 5:30 am by the sounds of VERY LOUD cars at my hotel--the Lu Fran--it was a great weekend. Found time to go to the Cape May County Zoo on Saturday morning--free admission which was nice. Seemed like a good crowd. I think what the organizers did this year was have a "block party" outside Convention Center Saturday night to deter the speeding cars and the burn outs. There were police ALL OVER the place as well pulling cars over left and right. Yesterday at Mariners it was family appreciation day which was nice as well. I have to say the mix of classic cars and all the party people from the Irish fest was great to see!!

Yes we did make it home ok, thank you for asking. It was a much slower ride home didn't want to take any chances. Thank goodness the NJHRA was able to help us in getting the car fixed.

Hey Videoventures65 were you in town on Thursday night? When we were going to the kick off party something had happened down your way. Cops and ambulances, did not hear of anything down our way.
