Just finished some work over at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ...They did a lot of improving on the place and added a really wild looking coaster (if you can call it that) which I'm sure will be getting a lot of attention this year. But I'm still anxious to maybe visiting Dorney Park!

Got back late last night. This park just gets better every year! The new coaster is great. I got to be on the 69 news and was asked questions about how I liked the new coaster along with my girlfriend and my 2 neices! We went home and put on the news and there we were! Ha ha. Anyone on this board should give this park a try. It is best to go on a monday or tuesday in the early summer. The lines are very short if any. The park now has 6 big coasters and 2 smaller ones along with a huge collection of other thrill rides and 2 trains and a huge water park. Dorney park is the cleanest park and most beautiful park in pa! Check it out!

PA has some nice parks. Dorney Park has a rich history, in fact Bill Tracy from Cape May who did a lot of work for Hunt's Pier and other Wildwood piers (Fun, Sportland) in the 60's, also did work on the old Dorney Park dark rides in the 60's (all gone now since early 90's-one burned in 1983) as well as Waldameer Park in Erie, the ride-through Whacky Shack and walk-through Pirate's Cove. Ocean City, MD also has a Pirate's Cove and ride through Haunted House built by Bill Tracy in 1962. (The Hunt's Pier Pirate Ship was also built in 1962 as well as Dorney Park's dark ride rethemed as Pirate's Cove, later Bucket O' Blood) Knoebel's has one of the best ride-through Haunted Mansions. PA once had many parks, but now only has about 10 or so now. I would like to add that the Dorney Park Gold Mine walk-through which was one of Bill Tracy's creations was a very unique walk-through under the arcade and is supposedly still there, intact. It closed about 1985. Now, if we could only convince Dorney Park/Cedar Fair bigwigs to reopen it, even if just for Halloweekends.

Dorney Park is a nice park, but it doesn't have the same charm that it use to have when my family first started visiting it in the early 80s. You can hardly recognize the old part of the park that once was the heart of park. There also is too much concrete at Dorney with too little shade and landscaping. I think they tore down too many of the trees. I don't mind that they tore down Hercules though....that ride would beat the crap out of you.

Your words have an ironically familiar ring to them...Almost like if I or someone else here said:
Wildwood Crest is a nice town, but it doesn't have the same charm that it use to have when my family first started visiting in the early '60s. You can hardly recognize where the original motel district was that was once the heart of the town. There are also too many condos in the Crest with few too truly historic motels remaining. I think they tore down too many motels. I don't mind that they tore down some of them though...Some of those motels became obsolete.

Let me take a shot at this. Dorney park, hershey park, dutch wonderland, willams grove amusement park, kennywood, waldemeer, conneaut lake, knoebels grove, sesame place, Idlewild and soak zone, bushkill park, delGrossos Amusement park, lakemont park. Okay thats 13 big parks! Well bushkill is quite small, They been getting flooded out now 2 times in less then a year and have lost alot of rides including there haunted pretzel! ( no robert I dont know if they are going to rebuild it or not) Now here are some smaller parks In pa.. weona park Opened in 1920. Pocono play park, openend in 1970. Land of little horses, opened in 1971.Bucktail family fun park and camp resort, 1986. Carousel village at Indian walk, 1992. These parks all have carousels and an assortment of rides and some have small coasters. Pa really has alot of parks ! Wow! How many parks does PA have?

You love old dumpy motels, and I love old dumpy amusement rides. You would love for them to bring back the Rio Motel, and I would love for them to bring back the Pirate Ship. IMHO, the Hunt's Pier Pirate Ship is by far cooler than any doo wop motel that was ever built. I do, however, respect and understand what Cedar Fair is doing with Dorney Park. They are just trying to keep the park alive and profitable. The same thing with the Wildwoods, the motel owners are just looking out for themselves by selling the dumpy motels while the selling is good. It's all about the dollar bills in the end.

As long as those "dumpy motels" (per CV) have a following and continue to be profitable, they'll be part of the landscape of 5 mile Island. re

How many parks does PA have? The Pennsylvania Amusement Park Assoc. lists 21, but they don't count some of the little ones. You can find out at [ftp]www.paamusementparks.com[/ftp]
