Since the technical issue of how to incorporate images into posts here comes up periodically I thought I would try to write something that people could refer to when they're having trouble with that.
Everyone please correct or augment these instructions as you see fit.
--------------
• First thing to know: you can't post pictures directly to the boards. It's too much of a data burden for message boards to store photos even in a controlled fashion.
• So... what you want to do is put them somewhere else. When you do this, each of your photos will receive its own URL (Web address). To include a photo in a post, you surround the photo's URL with special HTML code "tags" ("img" at the beginning and "/img" at the end, in square brackets, no quotes) to tell the DWPL forum software to open a window, so to speak, to the other site to view your photo.
• Where do you put the photos? On a special photo hosting site. Many of these provide the service free. Some offer premium plans for a fee that you probably don't need. The two that I have been using to date are:
Another one that looks pretty good is:
• Pick the site you like and register with them (just as you did here), setting up a username and password. Then log in and look around your member page until you find the photo uploading area. You'll probably see a button labeled "browse" that you'll use to locate the photos you want in the directory of your computer's hard drive. When you've highlighted a photo's filename, you'll be able to click a "select" or "choose" or "open" button that will copy the path to the photo into a blank slot. Once that's been done, you'll see an "upload" button below the slot that you'll click, and your photo will be copied (uploaded) to your "account" or page on the photo hosting server.
• After uploading your photos at either Photobucket or Imageshack (and probably all the others too, but those are the ones I know) you'll see them, thumbnail-sized, arranged in rows on your account page with several different lines of ready-made code displayed next to or below them. You can either copy the code line labeled "forums" and paste it into your DWPL post at the point where you want the image to appear, or you can copy the plain URL and add the HTML image tags yourself, either by typing them in or by selecting the URL and clicking the image button in the message composition window. That would be the button bearing an icon that looks like a photo print with a white border.
• Use the "preview" button in the message composition window to make sure your photo displays properly before you actually post it.
Have fun
