Since things are slowing down a bit at the end of the season, just figured I would throw this out for conversation.
Am I the only one, or is it true that many if not most of us have not given a second thought to, or perhaps never even heard of, some of the places mentioned, whether they are still standing or not.? My experience has been almost exclusively with places in the Crest or, let's say, south of Rio Grand. To be honest, I've never even heard of some of the places, especially those in NW, until they get attention because they are being demolished. Then, when I see a picture (e.g., the Lurae), I might think, "gee, that's sad, it looks like it was a nice place", but that is about it.
I can definitely empathize, but it is almost like old socks in the back of the drawer. One doesn't give them any thought, and probably wouldn't notice if someone threw them out, unless someone told you "hey, I'm going to throw out these old socks with the Santa Clauses on them, is that ok?"
So all this being said, wouldn't it be better to raise awareness ahead of time? This website used to have the "endangered list", but that is not being done anymore. I assume there are still some places in danger? Or even the local paper. Why are they always so quick to give some whimsically sentimental post-mortem, like with the Captain's Table, as opposed to advocating preservation proactively?
Who knows, maybe with enough attention, a Bill Gates type would come in and throw some cash in to fix some of the places up, before more get beyond the point of no return.
Just wishful thinking, I suppose....
