Wow, just walked by there while strolling down the Boardwalk last Tuesday. Even peeked through the windows, just to get a better idea of what the place looks like in the offseason. My family and I had breakfast at Adam’s two summers ago. Nice place, good atmosphere and food. Definitely up there with Pompeo’s as far as good places to get breakfast on the Boardwalk in North Wildwood. The Montego Bay Resort, of course, has undergone massive renovation and expansion over the past few years. It’s good to hear that the blaze did not spread to the hotel area (and let’s just keep our fingers crossed that no one was/gets hurt). At any rate, I’m sure the complex as a whole will be feeling the repercussions of this incident for some time. Fire has certainly been the bane of the Wildwoods’ existence, huh? (Though, I’m sure you could make a case for the wrecking ball these days…)

Have friends that were down Saturday, checking out our unoccupied homes. They said that Montego Bay was hopping as was Admas, hordes of folks down for the Valentines weekend I guess.
Here's an update on the fire from the Coast-
2/14/05 - UPDATE: Fire At Montego Bay In North Wildwood Monday Morning -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- An overnight fire damaged the Montego Bay Resort this morning. North Wildwood Fire Chief Paul Evangelista told our Scott Wahl today that a fire started around midnight, Monday morning at the Montego Bay Resort at 18th and the Boardwalk in North Wildwood. The fire may have started inside the lobby area of the motel, and spread to the adjacent Adams Restaurant next door. Fire crews from North Wildwood and Wildwood battled the blaze, and it was contained to the lower level of the building.
Some damage was also reported to adjacent living quarters on the first floor of the building. Some smoke infiltration spread to upper floors of the building, but most of the damage was centered on the lobby and the restaurant area.
So far, no cause of the fire has been revealed. The Cape May County Fire Marshal's office is investigating.

OK, so there definitely was some damage done to, at least, the hotel’s lower level.
Judging by the reports, though, it doesn’t sound like there were any major injuries.
Let’s continue to keep our fingers crossed…

Al, Wonder if anyone was there, didn't say anything about evacuating folks. They also own the Surf Song, the pink building where Ocean Ave. ends on 18th. Not sure if that is opened in the winter? re

I’m sure that they had to evacuate people.
Montego Bay is one of the more prominent year-round resorts in the Wildwoods. Plus, as you alluded to earlier, I’m sure there were plenty of folks staying there for Valentine’s Day.
The Surf Song, I am fairly certain, is closed for the offseason. I believe it is open from early April through mid-October.

The fire started in the reception area, went thru to the restaurant. First three floors of the motel have either fire or smoke damage. Guests did have to be evacuated, and put up at the Bolero motel. It's not known when Montego Bay will be opened back up. The Surf Song is being cleaned and will be open by next weekend.

"The Cape May County Fire Marshal's Office informed WCZT/WWZK today that the cause of Monday morning's fire at the Montego Bay Resort at 18th and the Boardwalk was accidental. The office says that no official cause has been revealed, but says it was an accident." www.ask4direct.com/InfoRead.asp?id=WCZT&InfoID=124509This sort of thing has always bothered me about our area. We tend to be secretive and when we do so...questions arise. For any out of the area fireman... Is this standard procedure?

I never understood the need for secrecy in situations such as this.
Present the facts, and let the chips fall where they may.
The community, as a whole, would be better off if this was the general rule of thumb.

Absolutely, Al.
Openness and transparency will make a community better, safer, and, perhaps, more at ease with its public servants and leaders.
