Here's one...Does anyone recall the original name of the motel that stood where THE ADVENTURER is today? How about the name of the popular Italian American Restuarant that was once located at Burk and Pacific Ave in Wildwood?[/quote]

we stayed at the casa nova 3 years ago one september.. The indor pool was ideal for a cool september day:) What a great hotel.. Frank There was a motel on stanton rd. called the casa nova. It had an indoor pool under what looked like a corrogated plastic structure. I believe they used to advertise that they had the only indoor pool in the WW's. It was demolished last year for condo development. What a shame, it was a really neat motel. Is this the one you were thinking about? I believe the evening star is still on stockton and pacific but has been a condo since the 90's. The El reno was further down in the crest. It was owned by the daughter of a women I boarded with as a high schooler. and I think the di lito was demolished recently but I think it was given a different name before this happened. I can't think of it now. Anthony, I'm very curious, how did you know about the Birtches? ?

wana know somthing scarey?? I too had a baby blue Schwinn Continental 10 speed in the early 70's!!! Got it from Guys bicycles in feasterville .. In fact, I still have it!! In the garage buried! lol Frank Beachboy: The original Del Conte Resort later became the Casa Nova, which sadly as you said is gone, gone, gone... I used to spend each and every summer in the Wildwoods and used to ride my old Schwinn Sting-Ray and later my Schwinn 10 speed Continental English racer all around the island! I still recall the Birtche's - not to mention the address and telephone number: 123 E. Stanton Rd, Tele: 522-0305. Those old motels were basically landmarks I memorized simply not to get lost riding or walking around at night when I was old enough to wonder around. If the truth be known, I had a crush on a teenage girl who worked at the Birtche's for a few summers...So recalling the address and the phone number are pretty much etched into my memory even to this day!

The old Oceanside had no pool very much like the smaller nearby Sherbrooke Apartments on Faragut and Ocean from my recollection...I only know that because when I was younger my sisters and cousins used to bash (tresspass) almost each pool located at every oceanfront motel and never got caught and Oceanside was one we learned to avoid.
I had both my Schwinn's stolen in Wildwood when I was a poolboy at both Uries Motel (aka Jones Boys) which was on Rio Grande in Widwood and the Internationale Motel which was located at St. Paul and the beach in WWC.
My sister would know the initials of the girl who worked at the Birtche's I'm sure. While I can recall the address and phone number of many long gone motels (probably dozens) her name is just not registering at the moment - especially since I was a sucker for a lot of "beach honey's" almost every summer.
Oh. An the name of the motel that stood where the ADVENTURER is situated today was called the AQUA MOTEL. Across the street where that huge apartment or condo complex is situated along the beginning (or end) of the boardwalk - OCEAN TOWERS?? - well that was just a big old sandy lot.

Frank, Anthony and beachboy,
To be honest, I'm just sitting here, playing the roll of a sponge right now, just soaking up (and totally enjoying) your collective knowledge and great stories of the Wildwoods.
Having been born in 1978, my knowledge of the island and its history is relatively limited. However, I am learning so, so much, just by reading all of your memories and remembrances of the way things were and how things have changed.
I have been interested in the history of the resort from a very young age, and, quite frankly, have always longed for a forum such as this, where I could ask questions and learn from others who share my passion.
This has been a blast so far!

I'm having a blast as well!!! and learning alot myself. Thanks all!!!
I was trying to think of the former name of Urie's motel last night and just couldn't get it. Wow.. Thanks Anthony, now that brings back memories since that was one of the first things you saw coming in. We used to make the right turn there, then a left to get to NJ ave to go to the crest. remember, there used to be a big old boat yard around there before they put the mcdonalds ect. in. It was a fun place to go because they had all the boats up on skids and you could walk right up to them in those days.
Anthony: was your Birtches crush a blond?

That girl seemed to be a blonde - or at least had dirty blonde hair from what I recall!
But I need to know at 43 should I feel older than most here? If so, that's okay....Perhaps older beachboys such as myself and some others here can provide some Wildwood memories for those who are younger. Which is also okay!

Anthony:
I'm 44 so were close in age and our paths probably crossed at some time in WWC, maybe in the late 70's It has been a great experience to talk about all of these past memories. For some reason, age doesn't seem to matter. Al is much younger but he has been able to really jog my memory on a few things and teach me some things I didn't know. It's been great fun!!!!!
I think I may have known your girl. Was your girl related to the owners in any way?

I used to go down to where Diamond Beach is and visit that big circular club building called The Playpen, until it was destroyed by fire like most Wildwood venues. Even when I was underage I was able to sneak in - not because I looked older than I was but because the bouncers and doormen were usually drunk and did their job pretty poorly.
That girl at the Birtche's was never actually a girlfriend - just a girl I really had become infatuated as a teenager for a few summers. I don't think I talked to her more than twice but I still recall her face.
I had more friends who were girls during the summer than I ever did actual girlfriends. I knew that the summer wouldn't last forever and was not brave enough to risk having my heart broken come Labor Day. So I kind of remained the "lone wolf" that I was...LOL!!!

Frank: do you rember the first of teh 2 stardust clubs? If you remember, the first one burned down then they build a second. The first one had a very interesting internal feature, do you remember it? There was a club called the freemont, remember it?
Anthony: thanks for clearing up the name of the club in DB, the playpen. Been there long time ago. There wasnt much more down there at that time. You were right about the bouncers. things were much more laid back in those days and if I am not mistaken, the drinking age in NJ was 18 at the time.

OK: I have to give you the answers of some of the original trivia questions. Al: You're gonna love this one: Question 2: The maiden name of the pink orchid motel on rambler rd. was THE PINK PANTHER. They had a great big sign with a picture of the Pink Panther on it. The motel had a real crazy pink paint. It was really crazy and quite radical (talk about doo wop) but I don't think it was profitable in the long run. It was sold not too long after and the new owners re-named it the pink orchid motel but kept a variation of the pink color. Do you think they kept a similar name and color to save money?? In those days, I would bet on it. Times were tough and it cost big bucks to change a motif. Can anyone remember another motel in north wildwood that also changed hands but kept a similar name to save money in the transition?

beachboy: I kind of knew Bill and Josephine Birtch who owned or at least ran Hotel Forget Me Not many years ago...I recall their hotel was actually a big three story white house with a big open porch and a small garden that ran right along the front and towards the side around the porch.
Anyone remember the old VOGUE MOTEL located on East Lavender Road in WC? It was really a small place a block or two from the beach - with no pool from what I recall. It later became the AVANTI MOTOR INN.
I also just recalled the TOPAZ MOTEL at Seaview and Primrose Ave in WC - which I think might still be there.

your right. I do remember the stardust burning down... The fremount rings a bell but I cannot locate it in my head.. Some more hints?? The playpen was owned by Art Stock. he was (is) a frat brother of mine .. The college Of NJ. Was known then as Trenton State College.. Phi Alpha Delta .
