Ok here are some oldies: Most of these date back to when I spent my high school summers in WWC in 77' and 78' and See if you can get them:
1. Does anyone remember the Birches Hotel in WWC. also, what was it's sister hotel (still standing) and what was the significance of these hotels?
2. Does anyone remember the maiden name of the pink orchard motel orchid in in WWC
3. Does anyone remember which motel stood on the site of the bal harbor on Stanton road.
3. Does anyone know the name of the now closed restaurant that was associated with Duffinetties?
4. Does anyone know the former name of the Bayside pizzaria. I asked the current owners over the summer and they didn't remember.
Does anyone else have any trivia from the past to share? bb

Wow, this is great! Not because I know the answers to any of these questions, but because I DON'T! I'm sure we are all going to learn a great deal about the Wildwoods from you, beachboy!

I'm trying to remember....what was there before the Bal Harbour. I remember the first summer the Bal Harbour was there...it seemed out of place surrounded by the likes of the Town and Country, the Crest and the Saratoga (the first 2 of which are gone ). I'll be interested to hear. Can't begin to answer the others!

Al: Now I really feel old. ha ha. but it was a really interesting time in WW history.
Squeezix: It was a very old 2 story motel with about 30 rooms that all faced the ocean because the motel was positioned parallel to the ocean. In the back was a big dirt lot. I do not believe there was a pool. I'll hold off on the name to see if anyone else remembers.OK?

How about the name of the hotel in the crest that had a Baseball moteif? It has been gone probably since the late 70's...

Ok Guys:
I think I have 2 #3's The restaurant #3 answer is Asselta's. It was a nice italian restaurant, the owner is a great guy who I believe is associated with Moore's inlet now, I worked there in 78' as a dish washer. His family also owned duffinetties and other one I can't remember the name now. The place burned down years ago.
Frank: You've got me stumped on the baseball hotel. Do you have any more info on it , location, etc??
Frank: I've been racking my brain on your baseball motif motel in the crest. Here is what I came up with, In the sixtys, a few pro basketball players opened a restaurant in the crest called The All Star., This restaurant later became Schumman's on crocus (now gone) I believe they also owned a motel of the same name in the crest. I am not sure of their names or if they played for philly or NY. but I'm sure it was basketball.

thanks Frank, but... I have to confess I found this out while working for schumanns back in 77' 78' (I was the morning shift busboy and late night sandwich guy.) Of course, even back then I was interested in WW history so the owners told me the story about these basketball players owning the restaurant. for some reason, I couldn't make the connection tonight. I think the baseball/basketball threw me off.

Actually the name of the motel located on Stanton Road in Wildwood Crest was BIRTCHE'S MOTEL... And I believe the original motel that was situated where BAL HARBOUR is today might have been called the OCEAN SIDE MOTEL.
Here's one...Does anyone recall the original name of the motel that stood where THE ADVENTURER is today? How about the name of the popular Italian American Restuarant that was once located at Burk and Pacific Ave in Wildwood?

Anthony:
I believe you are correct with the Birtches (spelling). It was a very old hotel that served as back up to the forget me not hotel. It was named for the owners. They were related to the owner of the forget-me not hotel on NJ ave.
the oceanside motel is still there, one block south of the Bal harbor on farragut or at least it was there last year. It sits the same way as the beach waves motel sat parallel to the beach. If i'm correct, the oceanside did not and still does not have a pool.
You've got me stumped on your questions .. I'll give them some thought.

I also recall a large motel over at Stanton and Ocean called the Del Conte Resort Motel which featured THREE pools - one of which was indoors.
Anyone remember that one?
How about the tiny Tiki Motel on the beach in NW? Or the Evening Star, El Reno, and di Lido motels all once located in WWC?

There was a motel on stanton rd. called the casa nova. It had an indoor pool under what looked like a corrogated plastic structure. I believe they used to advertise that they had the only indoor pool in the WW's. It was demolished last year for condo development. What a shame, it was a really neat motel. Is this the one you were thinking about? I believe the evening star is still on stockton and pacific but has been a condo since the 90's. The El reno was further down in the crest. It was owned by the daughter of a women I boarded with as a high schooler. and I think the di lito was demolished recently but I think it was given a different name before this happened. I can't think of it now. Anthony, I'm very curious, how did you know about the Birtches? ?

Beachboy:
The original Del Conte Resort later became the Casa Nova, which sadly as you said is gone, gone, gone...
I used to spend each and every summer in the Wildwoods and used to ride my old Schwinn Sting-Ray and later my Schwinn 10 speed Continental English racer all around the island! I still recall the Birtche's - not to mention the address and telephone number: 123 E. Stanton Rd, Tele: 522-0305.
Those old motels were basically landmarks I memorized simply not to get lost riding or walking around at night when I was old enough to wonder around.
If the truth be known, I had a crush on a teenage girl who worked at the Birtche's for a few summers...So recalling the address and the phone number are pretty much etched into my memory even to this day!

Anthony:
Awesome info!!! I used to know the owners of the birtches, The teanage girl you knew, was her initials TA? Your bike story brought back many memories. In my first full summer in WWC, I was not old enough to drive. I purchased an old 10 speed so that I could get get from Primrose road to work on crocus road. Well, maybe it was the salt air but the chain mechanism kept breaking. I was in panic because this was my only mode of transportation and I was pretty much alone. I spent many afternoons trying to keep that bike together for the summer.
