Doowopper's report of his recent trip has got me going. I HATE construction noise, it totally jangles me. I've already had one visit to the Wildwoods (03) all but ruined by it.
This past weekend I made 2 reservations for mid-September. I need to send a deposit to one of them and cancel the other one ASAP. The locations are (1) Ocean Ave. at Bennett, (2) Atlanta Ave. between Atlantic and the beach. The latter is across from the Coastal Colors condo village, which is supposedly complete, but I gather there are quite a few other projects in the vicinity.
Does anyone know if there's a big difference between these two locations in terms of risk of construction noise? Or, can anyone suggest an office I could call that might be willing to tell me where the major construction sites are?
Thanks for any assistance on this...

fuzzy,
Ocean & Bennett should be fine. We're talking about the Windward, the LuFran... maybe the Starfire... trying to think of what else is in that area.
The condos behind the LuFran (where the Blue Jay and Tally Ho used to be) are done... and the Eden Roc is still across the street.
I don't think there is/will be any new construction projects going on (major or otherwise) in that area for a while.
As for the Atlanta Ave. location, I would have to defer to someone with a better understanding of what is/will be going on in the Crest.
All I can say is, that area in general has been undergoing some dramatic changes for quite some time... so I guess you never quite know what might be going on.
Hope this helps a little...

Thanks, Al. Your comments match my impression, although I wish they didn't. The Atlanta Ave. place is much less expensive and that unfortunately carries a lot of weight in all my decisions right now. I think this place is pretty much sandwiched between Coastal Colors and the Bal Harbour. But I just went back to the transcript of my audio notes from last September, and it says there were ugly demolition sites across from the Madrid (to the north) and also on the Farragut beach block. Those sites would be only about 2 blocks away. And I can't remember what's on the west side of Atlantic Ave. at Atlanta, either. On Zillow.com, it looks like there might be a hole there big enough for another monument to greed...
My notes also said to myself, "Self, next time you really should stay in this area near the Bel-Air" (which doesn't have anything available for that weekend, bless 'em). But my age-old attachment to the more nearly perfect beach and surf of the lower Crest is always tugging at me... Ouch ;D
Anyone been in the vicinity of Atlanta & Atlantic recently enough to recall what's in progress around there?

I believe the major project I'm thinking of is a condo resort ($1 mil each) on or near Atlanta at the ocean, not on Atlantic Avenue. Thom

Hi Thom, I think that's Coastal Colors (see www.belldonscoastalcolors.com ). The folks at the motel are telling me that project is basically done now, except for some occasional hammering and "you might see a crane going in once in a while" (?! "crane" and "done" don't seem to belong in the same statement). I don't know what to believe... Google Earth's aerial perspective shows that block completely razed with a few vehicles sitting on it in a copyright 2006 view; Zillow's view, also copyright 06, shows the project half built with the oceanside half of the block still dirt. I tried calling the number on the Coastal Colors Web site but was only able to leave a message.

There's another one where a small hotel was torn down and is being replaced by a major condo project. If it's not Atlanta, maybe I'm thinking of Toledo. Either way, it's directly on the ocean. Thom

Fuzzy -- If you're worried about construction noise, do not stay at the place by Belldon's Coastal Colors. That seems to be where the majority of the construction in the crest is going on right now. I stayed at Ocean Place at Rambler Road (near the Oceanview, Admiral, and Diamond Crest motels) the first week of July and heard no construction noise until I took a walk around the area one day. I found lots of construction going on south of there, like between the Bal Harbour and Coastal Colors and a little farther south. I don't know about the Bennett Ave. area.

Either way, it's directly on the ocean. Must be Toledo then. Can't be Atlanta, not on the south side anyway, and AFAIK the Lampliter is still there on the north side. The Coastal Colors Web site FAQ describes the development location as "bordered by Atlantic Avenue to the west, Atlanta Avenue to the north, Nashville Avenue to the south, and the ocean to the east," and the diagram of the development shows it going right up to the beach ( www.belldonscoastalcolors.com/beachhome_popup/legend.jpg ). I remembered this morning that I had taken a picture last year that included the beachfront side of Coastal Colors: (Nicely lit up on the left side of the image, of course, is the Silver Beach, which was on Nashville and is now dust <sigh>.) Your report is certainly discouraging. I'm wondering what the bleep they found inbetween Coastal Colors and the Bal Harbour to build on, I must be forgetting something or not up to date on my demolitions. I think Al is right about the Bennett area--for now, there's no space nearby for anybody to squeeze in another condo. Only trouble with that location, noisewise, is it's very central, very close to the convention center--and this is firemen's weekend we're talking about Never been down for that weekend before... should be (ahem) interesting . Usually I go for biker weekend but my work schedule won't permit that this year. On the whole though, loud music and drunken revelry beats construction noise. Maybe I should just wait to stay in the Crest again (Bennett is technically Wildwood, right?) until they finish raping it. Wonder how many years that'll be...

Maybe where the Town & Country was? Probably is something going on at that site, Martin, according to novacancy in this post: dwpl.proboards44.com/index.cgi?board=motels&action=display&thread=1153465002&page=1#1153652872I vaguely remember the Crest which she mentions in that same block, but I'm drawing a complete blank on the Town & Country, can't picture it. Do you know if both of those motels came down during the '05-'06 off season? -Kathi a/k/a/ fuzzy

No, the Town & Country and the Crest Motels were both gone by then, Kathi.
