A few of my students are going because their Dads are fireman up here in North Jersey. I am pretty darn jealous that I have to be at work and they will be in WW!

Remember how many firemen wrote about not having enough hotels to stay at any more. Well, on my drive around town today, I noticed several smaller fire departments with their company signs hangin from the upper balconies ------- of condos! I don't know if this is a long term solution to the problem the firemen face with lodging but it's good to see that many of them who had problems finding a place to stay have taken one of our ideas and -- hopefully -- made it work out for them. Maybe if the hotel/motel association or the chamber could start marketing all these available condos like they do for hotel rooms, a lot more organizations wouldn't be so concerned about finding a place to stay. (Provided the condos can be marketed at a decent rate for events). Thom

We Americans are very resilient. Hopefully, this evidence will help put at ease the folks bemoaning the demise of the motel rooms. If people want to come to WW, they will find a way. If they don't, it probably was not that important to them in the first place.

The firefighters are staying in Wildwoods as of today's meeting, we are holding to 2010 and 2011. I think no one wants to go A/C and Edison expo doesn't have the rooms. The only other place is the Meadowlands Arena or the Expo Center in Secaucus. But again it won't be a family affair anymore unless Xanadu will be done. But now what the Firefighters need is the State Association to have a committee or a marketing group like International Chiefs or Firehouse Expo has and get reduced rates for the hotels. I think the Gov. was sincere today and he is working for us. Glad that no one booed him. I also heard that the Ocean View is being renovated sometime after the 2007 season. No condos, maybe condo tel rooms. Not sure!

There really is no other place for families like the Wildwoods anywhere in the state. Atlantic City would never work out. The island is changing and will probably never be the same as it was even 10 years ago, but a lot of people are working to get more rooms back here as quickly as possible. Until then, we all just have to focus on promoting the condos at reduced rates as a temporary solution. There definitely needs to be some group with a website devoted to condo marketing, as there is for the Chamber and H/M Association. Today, I learned that Cape May is also booked to the rafters with firemen. "La Mer" and the "Summer Station" at least in Cape May were supposedly jumping. I was in one of them as part of my weekend job and the desk clerk said he couldn't keep up with all the firemen. That's ok with me. - Thom

This one alone has a few hundred. www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/new-jersey/southern-shore#3835We rented four units out of eight to a group of firefighters this weekend. So far we have received two complaints Saturday from other owners and neighbors and three today. Why can’t these so called professionals act like it. They were throwing beer bottles over the balcony last night and a few of the neighbors had to clean up the glass today. We have already sent an e-mail to the chief of the department telling them they are not welcome next year. The heck with reduced rates, next year we will be taking a lager security deposit if we decide to rent to the firefighters.

I was in WW once during the Firemen's convention - We went to bed early and there was so much noise in the motel. The next morning when we went out - ALL the Pool furniture was inside the pool, I could not even count how many cans of beer were floating. It gets WILD

Thanks for the website. It seems, though, that a lot of those rates aren't marketed toward the convention. And you're right about the firemen. They can be a handful. All the hotels had the same problems with them - forever. I was always told - and I firmly believe - that firemen are a different breed. I guess they feel if they're going to put their lives on the line 24/7, they deserve to let loose while on vacation. The same goes with cops on vacation. And as an ex-Navy man, I can relate because of the "Tail-hook" scandal several years ago involving fighter jocks. What do they say, "boys will be boys?" What about girls? Anyway, maybe we should start thinking about hiring bouncers for the weekend like some of the hotels do for Senior Week. If the bouncer isn't enough, then you call the cops, who will probably try to gently persuade and coax at first, before getting tough. That brings to mind another question: why do the cops let the firemen get away with so much? Probably because they understand that the firemen are here to have fun and let off steam for a couple of days out of a very dangerous career. And like the firemen, they, too, put their lives on the line every day. So, I guess we should try to understand and gently treat them like the little boys - and girls - they are at heart. It's only a couple of days. Thom

I'll first say a few bad apples can spoil it for everyone.
At the moment I'm less than enthralled with "some" fire company's general "you owe us" mentality. This is how my night unfolded when I retuned home around 10pm tonight, thanks to the group at the motel across the street. (some of you know the one).
10:10PM..........I can't hear my TV or my stereo, forget about thinking strait. The noise generated has been getting louder........4 letter words being scream.....every other word starts with an "F"......... loud music (they bring their own 4 foot speakers).......... the fights.......the arguments....listening to bottles being smashed.......this is a family weekend?
10:20PM.....police arrive(3cars)along with an ambulance......seems there was an altercation.......seems those bottles I mentioned hit a few of them.........the music stopped while everything got sorted out.
10:50PM....ambulance left with sirens.....things have settled down.......the police leave
10:52PM......now the music's going again and we're having a chugging contest.....it's going to be a very long night.
The motel owner, who never leaves his motel all summer, leaves on Thursday and returns only during daylight hours(to make sure his property is still standing, I guess) until Sunday morning. When asked why, he says he can't sleep, his "guest fire company" make too much noise. Why then should us residents have to put up this? He's the only one that benefits $$$$$!
I say who would willingly put up with this drunken(underage at times) mayhem in their community? IMHO this is the most disruptive group we host ALL year! Exactly how much respect would these stellar volunteer firemen receive in their own hometowns if they behaved like they do here this weekend?
Thom, I agree the police turn the other way unless someone has a complaint, live and let live I guess is their motto, on these event weekends I do wish they were more proactive rather than react only when someone complains.

Well, my family of firefighters were down to Wildwood this weekend. My husband, ( a long time firefighter), and I stayed in No. Wildwood, in a hotel, along the beach, with our teenaged firefighter son. It was extremily quiet there, I suppose due to the fact that there so few hotels/motels left there. I could not believe the number of condo's there. (My last trip to the WW'S was last Septmeber, and I did not go thru No. WW @ that time). Our older son stayed in Wildwood Crest with our Fire Dept., and paid an unreal amount for a not so nice motel, ("condo motel", on the beach front, which was NOT worth the $ amt, paid). It was also very quiet there. We spent a lot of time going back and forth from our's to their's. For someone who has been attending the fire conventions for more than 20 years, I found this to be the most quietest one. All in all, I thought this was the most silent firmens convention. What a shame it was to see the number of condo's that are FOR SALE!!! Sure do miss the older hotels/motels there. Oh, and I cannot believe the amount that these people are selling these "condo's" for.
And we will not be attending the Fall Car Show next week since they seem to have made so many changes, from what I had heard from some people. Apparently visitors cannot sit in chairs at the curbside to watch the cars cruising by anymore.
