I just saw this on our local news.. WILDWOOD CREST, N.J. - September 28, 2006 - Chopper 6 over Wildwood Crest at the New Jersey shore where a sight is attracting large crowds. A humpback whale beached itself Thursday morning near Wisteria Road around 5 a.m. The Coast Guard spotted the dead whale and alerted the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. Part of the whale's body is protruding. Experts tell us it could possibly be the whale's tongue or stomach. This morning, crews were on the scene with heavy equipment trying to figure out what to do with the large mammal. abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=animals_oddities&id=4607854

Thanks for passing this along, Tobygirl. That's a real shame... very sad. Just from that little aerial photo on 6abc site, you get a sense of how massive those creatures are. Wow.

It didn't actually 'beach' itself. It was spotted yesterday off Cape May, already dead. The Coast Guard put a radio thingie on it and tracked it all night. It's a sad ending to one of the truley amazing creatures of the sea.

Wow.. That's very sad. Do they have any idea how it died in the first place?

Not yet. They are trying to get it out of the water and will do an autopsy on it right on the beach. The Mammal Stranding people are taking photos of it's tail and sending them to Maine where the people there may know what whale this is. Many whales are in the data base up there and their tails are almost as differant as fingerprints. The poor thing will be on the beach for the next 6-8 hours and then will be moved to a landfill.

According to the 98.7 the Coast website, they said it had some type of injury. Went over there to see it first hand. Any clue what's happening at the Convention Center, several ambulances, the WW Police have the roads around there barricaded?
JUST IN: WHALE WASHES UP ON BEACH IN WILDWOOD CREST
A beached whale in Wildwood Crest today. Sources say a 25 foot long
whale came ashore in Wildwood Crest, on the beach, at Sweetbriar Road.
"We have been told by eyewitnesses that the whale is dead, with an apparent injury. A fisherman who was in the water on Wednesday says he saw the whale already deceased about 8 miles off the coast of Cape May. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine has arrived, and there are discussions what to do with it, which may include burying it on a beach due to its size. The whale is a humpback, according to witnesses who are at the scene."

Ew! I really don't think they will bury it on the beach...especally not in the 'Crest'! Once they do the autopsy, they will probably cut it up amd remove it to a landfill. I still think it's just sad that it came to such a final end. As for what's happening elsewhere today..I don't know, but there are sirens all over the place!

A landfill? I hope they don't take it to a landfill! That's pretty much "throwing" the thing out!
Pretty sad news. Weird how you spend all that money to go on boats to see a live one and rarely do, yet a dead one washes up on shore for free. Just seems a little ironic, that's all.
At least it happened now and not during the summer season!

As long as they don't blow it up with TNT like those idiots did on the West Coast a long time ago. Blubber flew a mile away and ruined a parked car, and the camera man, spectators etc. had to duck and cover from pieces of falling whale and look like fools.
