I think its sad to see some of the mom and pop stores leave same with motels but at the same time for wildwood to compete to other resorts around the usa they have to bring some names like applebees, or marriot, people like that and mom and pop it adds if the boardwalk got stores like that it would be cool mixed in thats how a great area works llok at downtown in the citys and neighborhoods they have both use doowop but let builders come in and build new they need an espn sportsbar on the boardwalk they need to attract some box type places i hate to say that but thats true only if they do it correctly.

It sounds interesting. They would have to stick to doo wop rules and not as I would call it "over build" NO high rises, and no over size boardwalk stores. This might be a good Idea cause it would give some of the other boardwalk store owners a push to clean up there act, and make there stores a bit nicer. I still see alot of crap down there on the boardwalk. Things could improve a bit.

ALso i know the height is an issues with hotel but if a few were to be built in downtown wildwood with restaurants in the mainstreet with hip bars that would be great then those bigger chains will bring people to the island to notice the doo wop and then they will go to the mom and pop if you understand what i am saying

What do you see in having more chain-type establishments in the Wildwoods as having an appeal?

theres alot of appeal because having a name is what brings more people down for instance look at mainline in philly it has its mom and pop stores but it also has chains chains bring in people for instance marriot people go there bc they know its a safe clean hotel but if they built one in doo wop standard in wildwood in the proposed district that company has more money to advertise and then more people see what the island has to offer

Atlantic City Press
Real estate prices, building heights soar in Wildwood
By TRUDI GILFILLIAN Staff Writer, (609) 463-6716, E-Mail
WILDWOOD - The city plans to increase the permitted height of buildings in the hotel/motel district, roughly the area east of Atlantic Avenue between Cresse and Schellenger avenues, to 250 feet. That's up from the current height of 128 feet currently allowed by city ordinance.
An ordinance allowing the new height was introduced Wednesday at a City Commission meeting.
The change comes after one new hotel, the 283-foot Nouveau Wave Hotel, received city approval to be built at the corner of Ocean Avenue and Rio Grande Boulevard, where the Rio Motel now sits.

I disagree.. I think chains will ruin wilwood. Thats what so unique about the wildwoods. NO chains,, Thats what makes it quirky different. And that is what we love. NO CHAINS@@!!!

i dont mean all chains i just mean a perfect mix to compliment already what wildwood has to add value you need some of those chains to help bring customers they attract, with the customers the mom and pop stores attract so everyone would be happy

How did the Days Inn get in to Wildwood?? I don't think chains would necessarily hurt Wildwood. All you have to do is look at Virginia Beach, Myrtle Beach etc to see that they have "chains" and are successful. I realize you can argue that the character will forever be changed. I think that change is going to happen and is happening. Best course of action in my mind is to get some Marriott's, Hiltons etc in instead of the condos as these would be much more affordable then the condos and would drive the condo craze down somewhat. The only way to preserve any of these motels is to get them on a protected registry and find owners that care about their properties and are willing to invest in them. With these "mom and pop" motels you are paying a fortune for what you are getting. With Chains you can count on cleanliness and quality as well as good customer service. I'm surprised at the number of owners and innkeepers that have no customer service skills, obviously they don't realize how important customer service is. I'm amazed every year at what I spend to stay in these "mom and pops". I love the Doo Wop style, it's just a shame that the owners let them get in to such disrepair. One example is the Flame Inn (I won't even go there because I don't want to bad mouth them).

I knew the owner of the Days Inn, Sonny, back when he used to be with the Reges years ago. Nice guy, though I haven't seen him since he hasn't been part of the Reges - Anthony (the owner) is only there now, along with his wife and daughter.

With Chains you can count on cleanliness and quality as well as good customer service. I don't know that this is necessarily true - sometimes yes, but sometimes no. Look around on the internet at reviews of various hotels/motels. You'll quite often notice varying reviews of hotels/motels that are part of the the same chain.

I have to agree with Ed on this one...
While we'd all love to see the original, authentic character of Wildwood preserved in its entirety, mom and pop motels and all, we're fighting a losing battle if we think we can hold on to everything that made Wildwood what it was the first time around... times have changed, people expect and want different things, and the cultural/sociological/economic conditions that allowed Wildwood to be built and function the way it did in past decades are simply no longer existent...
Things change and there are new economic realities we are faced with in the 21st century... chains are a part of that reality whether we like it or not (and there's no bigger supporter of mom-and-pop operations than me)... the key is to strike a balance...
You can't legislate the preservation of culture, its a constantly changing and evolving thing, but you can legislate the preservation of cultural artifacts, and that's what we're trying to do...
The motels, the architecture, the ambiance... those are the cultural artifacts which have managed to survive all these years... to work for a new generation, their function may need to be re-invented and adapted to today's culture (just being a cheap and convenient place to sleep is not enough anymore) but whether its moms and pops or corporate holding companies, anyone that wants to come in and put the money into preserving, restoring and re-inventing these buildings is a hero in my book...
We can never re-create the Wildwood of the 1950s, but we can try to make Wildwood a place that, while functioning as a 21st-century resort, captures the spirit of the 1950s better than any other place on earth...
In my opinion, every Doo Wop building that still stands on this island today has the potential to function as a successful and profitable operation for the 21st-century with the right kind of investment and management... if you try to operate a 1950s motel as if its still the 1950s, you will fail... but if you can come up with a clever way to take a truly unique building from the 1950s and re-invent it for a new 21st-century audience, the potential is limitless...
And the addition of "Neo Doo Wop" buildings and businesses (including chains) that play off the spirit of the original buildings only adds to the sentiment that Doo Wop is hip and is the wave of Wildwood's future.. the more investors we can bring into town, whether big or small, who understand the Doo Wop vision, the better off we'll all be... it doesn't do the Wildwoods any good to have a bunch of great 1950s motels owned and operated by people who don't take care of them and don't understand the need for modern amenities, customer service and creative marketing...
Oh... and by the way... its a pleasure to meet everyone on these boards and to finally be able to get involved in the discussions, pardon my abrupt introduction... I'm thrilled to see the kind of response we've had since we launched this message board a few weeks ago (or has it been months already? I've lost track of time). I've personally been an extremely busy guy over the past few weeks and just haven't been able to make a commitment to posting here as I originally intended, but I hope to do so from this point forward.
I will properly introduce myself in the "Meeting Place" forum as soon as I get a chance... and I encourage anyone posting on these boards who has not already done so, to get over there and introduce yourself!
And one more side note... we've been quite leniant with the moderation of these boards thus far. I'm not a big believer in censorship and want to encourage as much free and open discussion as possible as we build a sense of community here, but we really do need to try to keep the posts on-topic and relevant to the issues concerning Doo Wop and the Wildwoods. I don't mind some personal conversations and commentary here and there, but we need to keep such commentary tasteful. If you have anything to say that doesnt fit into that category, please keep it confined to private messages or e-mail. Cooperation is appreciated, and I look foward to the continued success of this message board!

Isn't it sad that the above statement is (somewhat) true? People don't want to experience the real culture of thier vacation spot, they want a trendy shopping mall they can feel familiar and comfortable with.
Not to get too far off topic (mike D), but that's the same reason Times Square sucks now. Sure they've removed all the "filth" (i.e., porn theaters, pickpockets, general scuzzies), but they've also removed all the character along with it. No real New Yorker has ANYTHING to do with Times Square in thier daily life, nor does Times Square really have anything to do with New York anymore. It just sits there for the tourists so they can feel at home with a starbucks.
Wildwood doesn't need chains. I may be somewhat wrong (and correct me if I am), but Wildwood has been doing fine all these years without the chains, so why would it want or need them now. It's still the king of the Jersey Shore. I has no other competion (Seaside?? please...Seaside is party favors). Apparently there are still enough people vacationing that don't need to stay at a Sheraton and shop at a Gap. And as long as people will be coming to the Jersey Shore for the boardwalk expereince, they'll be coming to Wildwood.
