Has anyone been around the area of Orchid Rd in the Crest? The construction on the sites of the HiLili and Kona Kai are moving along rather quickly. The Royal Hawaiian is dwarfed by the massive project going on next to it, and the poor Astronaut is looking like it is being pushed away. It looks so small compared to the new development around it. The huge monster that is going up on the site of the Swan is something to see also.
One question....
In the Video Doccumentary "WILDWOOD DAYS" it flashes that the Swan was SAVED! and then a year later its gone. Was it saved for a season, or was it simply the prospect of an unsire fate, or was it really actually saved until someone came in with a fat checkbook?

Interesting that the Royal Hawaiian loooks small next to something. They had that ww documentary on again a few months ago and it said the swan was demoed.

Really, do you think anyone in their wildest dreams could have imagined the Royal Hawaiian being dwarfed by anything?! Wow.
If I recall, there was a brief period back during the offseason of 04-05 when it looked like the Swan might be saved. In reality, I guess that was the product of either unfounded rumors or just bad information.
Plans for demolition/new construction were being finalized, and some of the plans were up in the air. Apparently, some took this as a sign that the Swan was "saved," but it turned out to only be a matter of time before it would meet its fate.
You're right, Rick, the massive complex going up in its place (isn't this the one called the Stockton Beach Club?) is a sight to be seen. I have heard that this building might incorporate some neon signage, so that should be interesting to see.

That whole area down there looks so stupid. Huge condos next to run down little motels. I really cant blame the inlaws (girlfriends parents) for selling the Kona Kai. Brand new condos next to a motel that was built in 1952. YES the condos look stupid, but they make the motels look worse.

Phil, the smaller motels that are left in that area (the Beach Colony and Astronaut immediately come to mind) really do look completely out of place now.
My brother and I took a walk into the heart of this district in early June, on a warm Saturday night. The area seemed so quiet, almost deserted at 9 p.m.
The glow of the Astronaut sign shined right up against the new condos to the motel's immediate west. I wonder how long it will be before whoever occupies them complains about it (if they haven't already).
That area barely resembles what it was just two years ago. Unbelievable.

I was at the Singapore last weekend. I saw a lot of Condos but nothing that dwarfed the Royal Hawian. Maybe from a different angle than I had it did.
Those Condos across from the Royal Hawian at 401 Orchid are a very good deal when hotel rooms that are 350SF are selling for 150K +

Yes it has changed so much. There is stil a nice lil breakfast place across from where the old casa nova was that we wil still hit next week tho.. *sigh*

That area depressed the **** out of me when I was walking around on a Sunday night taking pictures. An area that was once festive is now spooky. I made a mental note to avoid staying anywhere south of the Oceanview or preferably the Imperial 500. Below that the Crest is just being picked apart by these developers and is an ugly mess. I really appreciate the advice I got on this board not to stay down on Atlanta Ave next month--I'll be much happier up in Wildwood.

We always stay on Stockton, about two blocks west of the Swan and the Astronaut. We were there the week of July 4th and our habit is to sit on the porch or balcony in the evenings, have a few drinks and enjoy the lovely lights of the strip. This year the condos had completely obstructed our view of the neon signs we were so used to seeing. The old crest roads ain't what they used to be. The condos are monstrosities with no character. Will they even be around in 30-40 years??
