Yes. According to a lot of workers I've spoken to who helped tear down many motels over the last year they found most of them (mostly the inner structure) to be in amazingly good condition and could have lasted another 20 years from what I was told. A lot of them needed work on the outside but they could have easily been renovated and updated to a certain degree.
Other things however dictate how long any motel will remain standing on this island and such decisions provide a mandate on the eventual life span of these buildings right now. So in that regard, I do realize that these buildings won't last forever.

Interesting.
I guess, for the most part, it all comes down to neglect. The visible condition of many motels (like the Casa Bahama and the Rio, for instance) had really declined in recent years.
Condo supporters tend to note that many of these old motels have become “eyesores” (they love to use that buzz word). But the fact is, they have become so due to the neglect of their owners.
Anything (buildings, old documents… people, etc.) will “show its age” if not properly cared for. Anything. I’m glad that Anthony passed on this bit of info, about the demolition guys pointing out the general condition of the inner structures of these old motels.
It helps put things in perspective, in regard to the way some of the owners have neglected the condition and overall quality of their motels in recent years.
Part of it, I’m sure, is due to what must be very high maintenance costs. I understand that it is brutally difficult to run a motel business. Running a motel business in a rough economy only amplifies the challenge.
On top of all of the struggles of merely keeping the business afloat and running smoothly on the surface, to have to worry about extensive maintenance and renovation projects must be tough.
But, there must be other options out there, other than just letting your property go to hell while waiting to sell to the highest bidder.
