Is there a petition going around or a petition that we can start to save the motels. We need to do something. The motels are going and they are going fast.

A petition saved the ANSONIA HOTEL in New York City. If the remaining motels can be deemed of historical importance (by petition), as with the Ansonia, owners will be unable to sell to developers. Demolition will be illegal. Status as historically important is what will save the Wildwoods. We must make a petition, and petition the NATIONAL HISTORICAL PRESERVATION LEAGUE. The Caribbean Motel is on the list of historically important buildings (as far as I know) and so with a bit of elbow grease and organization, we CAN save the Wildwoods, we really can.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that it's the local government that has to deem a Motel, etc. as an historical property for it to be protected and illegal to demolish, make changes not in keeping with the original look, etc. Federal & State recognition of this type help with tax credits and other incentives to the owners, but the local government has to have the laws in place to really protect the properties. Hopefully with the changes in the government in the Crest coming next month, this may happen sooner than later and save what we have left.

I spoke with Christine Madrid French of Recent Past Preservation on this matter, and also spoke with the Jersey Preservation Office. Jersey preservation says we have to prove that there is grassroots interest. A demonstration and petition are imperative in order to prove there is grassroots interest. We have to get as many people and signatures together as we possibly can.

Well funkychic lets get started!! All you have to do is start with us on the board. Many of us have contacts and I know in my situation as a business owner I can sure get signatures.

Hi Everyone: This post is in regard to the post from funkychic on 7/7/05 which read: "I spoke with Christine Madrid French of Recent Past Preservation on this matter, and also spoke with the Jersey Preservation Office. Jersey preservation says we have to prove that there is grassroots interest. A demonstration and petition are imperative in order to prove there is grassroots interest. We have to get as many people and signatures together as we possibly can."
In addition to the contacting officials and motel owners (both great suggestions that have been voiced many times on this board), this seems to be the best option we have to go on right now. I'd be willing to put this together, print it out and distribute in The Wildwoods. I'm going down to Wildwood for a week's vacation starting this Saturday, so if needed, I'd be able to drop multiple petitions off to whatever area motels, businesses, etc we think we can get the most signatures the quickest from. It's imperative to do this immediately, before Labor Day, while the town is still full of people who'll sign.
What are the issues we need to cover in this petition? What should it say? Who exactly are we petitioning? I think we need to decide together. I invite everyone's comments on this (good or bad). I believe we can get this done in a day or two and by Monday have hundreds of petitions circulating The Wildwoods.
Whatever we decide, it should be posted here for all to see. Please reply ASAP...
Thanks, Mark

I realized I never even gave the folks on the board the courtesy of introducing myself, and here I am writing frantic posts with many captial letters in the title. Sorry...
My name is Mark Havens. I run a small graphic design firm, and teach design at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. My wife and I also live in Philadelphia. This summer will be the 34th year running our family has vacationed in Wildwood. I'm so happy to have found the DWPL, and happy to have met you all.

Glad to meet you.
I'm not the best with words so hopefully someone else here can elaborate and build off what I'm saying.
First off, hot spots to distribute=Caribbean and any other Doo-Wop properties. If you could get some at the Boardwalk Doo-Wop store or the Doo-Wop Diner that's other hot spots.
Basically petition for the M-1 zoning law. No residential units in that zone. Someone else here can explain better. But I think that's what your looking to petition for. Just about everyone visiting Wildwood is upset about the condo boom, so there is a good chance of plentiful signatures.

I believe that's the DWPL's phone number. Call them tommorow and ask if they would be willing to back this petition. Having it backed by an official organization would be great, not only that it makes it more "imposing" to the town but it would spread the DWPL's name around too.

Everyone,
A petition has actually already been initiated... Darleen (who posts here as funkychic) along with Mike Hirsch (miguelito) and myself have begun leading this effort... we spent some time last weekend walking around the Crest, going from motel to motel collecting signatures from guests as well as people on the streets and on the beach... Darleen has actually been more active with this than I have so I will contact her to have her post here with an update... we did get a significant response in just our first weekend of doing this... the plan is to continue spreading this around and then ultimately have it sent to the Crest commissioners as well as the Governor of NJ and other state officials...
Obviously, the more signatures the better, so if we can have multiple copies going around, that would be great...
I will upload a copy of the petition as it was originally prepared and post a link here so anyone who wants to download and print a copy to pass around may do so... we could then coordinate the consolidation of the petitions into one before it is sent to its final destination(s)...
Check back here soon...
-Mike D

Would there be any way for those of us not in/near Wildwood to get our names on the petition?

Tremendous work, Mike!
Big props to you, Darleen and Mike H. for taking the initiative and getting the ball rolling on this.
It’s great to hear that the first round of petitioning went well. It’s a great start, hopefully one we can all build off of.
I am sure that Frank (FlyinGN), Mark (Redeyejedi) and myself can serve as the movement’s “point men” here in Philly. Between the three of us, we should be able to gather plenty of signatures for the petition’s ultimate submittal to the Crest and the state.
Looking forward to getting a copy of the petition.
