I was just on a asbury park website and it said that asbury parks future looks bright New hotels and amusements are in the planning and when finished asbury will even rival wildwood!!!! I thought that was funny! What does everyone think? In the words of our "esteemed" Commander-in-Chief: "Bring it on!" It is funny that a seaside resort in that close proximity to NYC only hopes to "rival" Wildwood, which is practically at the end of the earth, comparatively. (Then again, that is probably what makes WW so attractive to NYers...Gas prices will have more to do with their return to Asbury Park than anything.) I think the people of Asbury Park realize where all of the investment capital has gone in the last decade or so...Cape May County. I think they are hoping for a gas crunch. Also, I think Asbury Park of the past decade provides a perfect cautionary tale of what can happen to a seaside resort that loses its identity.

It may be good for WW. Give em competition and maybe they will sharpen their pencils..

We drove through Asbury Park a few weekends ago and they really are building it up. There were lots of streets blocked off due to construction by the ocea. It will be interesting to see what is going to happen. However nothing will EVER beat Wildwood in my eyes.

I would think that the only way that Asbury Park would even come close to Wildwood now is if AP would have either Piers added to the boards going out over the beach or have rides between the blocks on the land where for example, Mitchel's Restaurant/Coffee Shop was. Also, AP would have to bring back Amusements/Rides that were in Buildings (The Casino & The Palace) which were open all year around and open during rainy weather in the Summer. I also think that AP's Boardwalk is shorter than WW's even though AP is adding more on the North side of Convention Hall (from web site). Another point is the Beach which would have to be made FREE to go on instead of paying for a Tag and the Public Showers / Restrooms would need a complete renovation (remember pay toilets there).

The big plus for Asbury is being close to NYC\N. Jersey and having a stop on the North Jersey Coast Line on NJ Transit.
This provides easy access to Newark and NYC and makes this a very viable year-round town. There are TONS of people who work in NYC and live in these shore towns.

Asbury is reinventing itself to be a very artsy community. They are not really concerned with the Family dollar. They are looking to become a SOHO at the Shore, or a New Hope at the Shore.
I have friends in that part of the state. I always found it fascinating that all the other towns that border Asbury are very wealthy, and here was this town with waterfront property that was a big dump.

Asbury is a loooooooooooong way off from Wildwood... while it is "up and coming", its still a ghetto is many areas. And it probably wouldn't rival Wildwood as much as it would rival Seaside and Point Pleasant... which is STILL a loooongs way off. But Skuakid is right... its definitly going for a more "artsy" thing... there's already a high gay population.
I don't necessarily agree with the rest of the area being wealthy... Neptune is pretty dumpy, and a lot of the towns north of Asbury are no bargin (keansburgs for example).
If you have any interest in Asbury- theres a book called 4th of July Asbury Park which gives its history, strangely intercut with all these Sprigsteen references... its not a very good book (so far).

Are you saying, skuakid that Asbury is being transformed from a run down town into a more "upscale" area with art galleries, etc? And there is probably no hope for the return of the amusement parks? They already demolished the Palace. The amusements all closed down after 1988, 1989. Too bad, they had some great dark rides. There are some great websites about the Asbury amusements. I guess Asbury will not return as a "family" resort like Wildwood or Seaside because there won't be much for kids to do that they will enjoy, in terms of amusement rides, etc. More like things that will interest yuppies and college students.

I don't think that is necessarily the case... i have heard talk about amusements returning... i think there is a good possibility of that- however, the FOCUS is something more of a trendy community... I think it'll be years before the possibility of amusements returning is a reality... right now just hope for some nice resturants and maybe a lounge or two...

True, those towns are not the best, but then there is Rumson, Middletown, Homdel. It's also true about Keansburg and that area. The crazy thing is those houses are selling for CRAZY amounts of money so the people that live there can't afford to buy a house there. It's like what's going on at the Shore. Houses are selling for 500,000+ and locals are being forced off the Island because they can't afford to live there.

well, see that's the thing... gerenally it STILL DOES look like crap... but it's a lesser kind of crap then it was just a few years ago... a few years back you had lots of abandoned buildings, the boardwalk was a ghost town, shady characters... now the boardwalk is starting to fill up, a few new restuarnts have opened, there renovating some old hotels that used to be abandoned, its safer... the changes are astetically subtle right now, but they are big for other reasons. the only websites i know of are old asbury tribute pages like www.savetillie.com, and www.side-o-lamb.com, but they might have links ...just googled- try www.asburypark.net

I don't know how long ago it was filmed, probably at least three years. But the recent Robert DeNiro movie "City by the Sea" was filmed primarily in and around Asbury Park. There are several shots of the boardwalk area, mostly at night. I have to admit that never having been to A.P., it looked kind of seedy. Even worse than the worst years of the Wildwoods' "down" years. Thank God Wildwood never got that bad. At least we had our boardwalk. Thom TheWildwoodsReporter.com
