Hey, Guys - Just thought I'd post a couple of pictures from March 1 that show some new activity on Hunts Pier. It isn't much but there is something new going up. Picture one is of the beginning construction of the new Sand Jam Surf Shop on the front of the pier. Picture two is of the old giant rooftop GOLF sign across from the pier being dismantled. I don't think it has anything to do with this but a couple workmen on the roof told me that there may have been a little bit of rooftop damage from the Shore Plaza fire next door. I doubt that has anything at all to do with the old golf sign coming down, though. Well, here are the pics: Thom TheWildwoodsReporter.com

Thanks for the pics again Digger. I never imagined that there was so much steel in that pylon.

I wish they would do something big with Hunt's Pier like build two new dark rides, reopen the Golden Nugget, add some more rides, and get rid of those space-eating Go-Karts. and build a Flyer II, although the Flyer's old spot is built upon with the former Escape from Dino Beach building and now a new building being built on the front.

Thanks for the pics again Digger. I never imagined that there was so much steel in that pylon. I don't think I'd be wrong if I said that GOLF sign must have been one of the biggest on the island - back in the day when a sign was a sign, not some flimsy concoction of plastic and fiber optics (which, of course, isn't necessarily bad, but where's the workmanship)? The Golf sign has a ladder climbing the back of it, and workmen had to go inside the sign to replace light bulbs. Now, that was a sign!!! Thom ;D

I just had an idea - I don't know if it's still possible, but if Jack Morey is reading this, is it possible to save the golf sign and move it to the new "Neon Garden" at Fox Park? If possible, please don't let such a well known icon disappear - Thom TheWildwoodsReporter.com

If possible, please don't let such a well known icon disappear - Thom TheWildwoodsReporter.com Just look at that sturdy old pylon compared to that thin-skinned ice cream cone sign to the right that blows apart every winter! In regards to the old golf sign, one of many that adorned that pylon, I believe it was removed at least ten yrs. ago, possibly saved by the guy that saved the Ocean Theatre marqee neon and Hunt's logo in front & some of the old Casino Theatre way back. That area is going to be humming now with the new Sam's, SandJam. Also the LaVita is staying and so is the sign, despite being told otherwise several months ago. Just got back into town, glad to see this site alive and well.

I'm sorry to say that I don't think it would be possible to add the Hunt's Pier Golf sign to the neon garden. I'm sure the lettering from that icon has been gone for as long as the pier has been. Funchase, [urlhttp://www.funchase.com/Images/Abandoned/Abandoned.htm][/url] has pictures showing the Flyer, Log Flume sign, the Lumberjack, and many other Hunt's icons, including the letters from the pylon, scattered about in the outdoors. Such a shame since upon looking at the photos, the letters seem to be in a decent shape. Some are more weathered than others, but bottom line is, Hunt's Pier, and whatever remains or remained of it, is slowly dissappearing forever.

The only way the memory of Hunt's Pier is being preserved is via the websites, and the museum. The fate of the pier itself, what is built on it and the Golden Nugget ride is totally up to the owners (Morey's?). Oh well, I built a "virtual" Hunt's Pier in Roller Coaster Tycoon 3. It is in 3D and you can ride all the rides. I didn't finish it yet. The rest of the piers and boardwalk are also included in my park.

Right Thom, no extra floors, they are really being scrutinized by bldg. dept., so for now its a refurb. Also being cleaned up is the MONACO. Now owned by the Grandview Gift Shop in front of it on the boardwalk, a well-run long standing part of the old Wildwood. They may also get their classic neon relit, it had been tackied over with rope lighting (the horror). The Monaco is an overlooked gem....right at the beach/boardwalk and near conv. center.....now that somebody can run it right and keep it attractive we should all be thankful. They just got new brochures.....e-mail at monacomotel@hotmail.com; web at www.monacomotelwildwood.com. Hey, I'm no PR guy, but we must pay attention to these little publicized places lest they feel ignored and SELL OUT like two hundred others have. Also, this motel wasn't named after "Princess Grace of Monaco" era, I believe it was originally owned by someone named Monaco. As was La Vita.
