I said this last year. The boardwalk is in need of some renovation and quick. I was dissapointed last year because of the trash, boards so loose that you tripped on them as you walked along, and boards that weren't even attached anymore. I can see the existing boardwalk not lasting to much longer. Especially when the weather channel keeps saying the "big one" will hit again.

I don't hit the boards as much as I once did. I never really paid attention I guess. I'll be more observant this year. Looks like AC is redoing/upgrading their boardwalk shops. From abc 6: Beginning this summer, storefront facades will get makeovers, a fountain will be restored and new lights and a bandshell added in front of Boardwalk Hall, the Depression-era arena that has played host to The Beatles, the 1964 Democratic National Convention and dozens of Miss America crowningsabclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=local&id=4110002

Does anyone know what the cost would run if they replaced the wooden boards with the fiberglass boards, like they have on the Spring Lake boardwalk. They would surely last longer and are easier on your feet if you are doing a lot of walking.
Also, I think Robert needs to contact Doc Brown and build a time machine to return to 1985.

It is now May. On Mothers' Day Weekend, there were Maintenance people going around & sweeping up trash in addition to changing the Trash Bags in the Barrels. There were attendants in the Restrooms however, the Facilities at the Schellenger Ave. Information Center are Closed for continued renovations and there are no temporary Facilities like last Season. There are some Businesses that could use some help on the outsides however, they need to make some $$$ I guess so that they can invest it into there appearance as the Season gets underway. I did notice that the Tram Car Paths were re-stripped and there were spots on the Decking of the Boardwalk with Temporary Plywood Patches to be repaired. I would think that the Boardwalk will get repaired when the High School Kids are out for the Summer (?kids participating in a County work Program if one is offered?). North WW had their 100th anniversary celebration had FREE Hatfield Hot Dogs, FREE Bottled Water, FREE Phila. Soft Pretzels, FREE Beer, FREE Pony Rides, and D.J. 'ed Music. This was right at the end of the Boards at the North WW Lifeguard Station. When the Crowds return for the Season, Wildwood will be back to life again hopefully! "D.J. Andy"

Hooray! I see lights and signs of life on the web cam, after months of watching the fringe on the building with the orange trim flap in the wind. the last few weekends I didn't have a chance to check, and every weeknight it has been dark, this is the first weeknight that I've seen this. I suppose Friday night things really will be hopping, can't wait to get there in a few weeks...

The truth is that it does not matter what time of the year it is. And it does not matter that not everyone is down there yet. The bordwalk is looking bad. They need to replace boards in major sections. Stores need to be fixed up. Wildwood is trying to become an all year around resort and they have made some progress, but things need to be done. The moreys are trying to be like disney and everyone else with there new ideas. You cant just do things at 50% and expect to have great results right away. Its going to take alot more then what they are doing to become what he wants to become. Read the 10 questions with the moreys in the leader. Im sure everyone has already. They are going to have to do something with the boardwalk. You cant have perfect piers then walk right out into the slums! Even Mr morey said that he walks out on to the bordwalk and does not want his kids to see those offensive t shirts etc.... I have to agree with you on this one, CrazyAboutWW! There is no excuse for the boardwalk, stores, rides, etc. not being kept up properly. The entire boardwalk should be cleaned several times throughout the day; no matter what time of year and major renovations/repairs should be done (at minimum) on a yearly basis. It really upsets me that these owners don't take more pride in their businesses. Wildwood will NEVER become Disneyland, Disneyworld, etc. and the sooner everyone figures that out, the better! More time, energy, money, etc. can be spent on making WW it's own special place... as it should be! I, for one, do not like "cookie cutter" things: where everyone and everything starts looking the same and there's no uniqueness or individuality. That's not to say that Disney ideas cannot be used to inspire WW businesspeople because they could take an idea, spin it and turn it into something specialized for WW. Can you guys tell I am in advertising and design... LOL! Bottom line is that WW is really in dire need of some individuality so that will put it back on the map of tourist destinations. Down with the chain restaurants, stores and attractions; up with family businesses that do remarkable things. Agreed!! Maybe the town should hire Rudy Giuliani as a consultant to clean the town up. Look what he did for Times Square. There are ALOT of boards that need to be replaced between Mariners Landing and Morey Pier. There were plenty of scary looking, toothless, tattooed people on the Boards like every Memorial Day, but a lot of them spent their vacation fund for the year and won't be back until next year. One of the problems on the Boardwalk is the lack of competition for the Morey Family. They own all the piers except the Midway. I'm not counting the old Hunt's Pier because all it has now are go-karts. The Orlando area stays competative because of competition. The Morey's do a good job keeping things up and adding new attractions but would be that much better if they were completing for those dollars. How long as it been since a new ride was added. I would like to say I really liked that new pirate ride on Mariner's Landing. It had a lot of local flavor incorporated in the ride like the one's on the old Hunt's Pier. The 3-d effects were cool as well. It got 2 thumbs up from my 5 yr old who was ready to ride it again. I don't think that too many chains will setup in the WW because it doesn't have that year round base to make it worth their while.

I don't think that too many chains will setup in the WW because it doesn't have that year round base to make it worth their while. I agree with you... at this time. However, with the Convention Center picking up events, with more and more motels and restaurants going year-round and with the highrise hotels on the horizon, this could all change. The Wildwoods are in the midst of a radical transformation, but the most dramatic phases seem to still be ahead of us. So, we can't say for certain what the island will be like in even 2-3 years from now. Once these highrise hotels are built, I believe a lot is going to change. The amendnities and services they will provide notwithstanding, these are going to be huge attractions, and are going to draw a lot of renewed attention to the island. It is then, I believe, that more chains may see the opening to move in. With more of a year 'round base, the island could be more attractable to larger organizations and companies that have long since stayed away. Time will tell...

I'm not in any rush to see tons of chains in the Wildwoods... Nor am I, Martin. Though, I can't help but see it happening. Whether this turns out for better or worse (if it happens at all) remains to be seen. But, ideally, it would be nice to see the Wildwoods retain its "non-corporate" charm. With the opportunities there in a "year round" Wildwood, however, I don't know if that can or will happen.

I do not have any problems with chains that fit Wildwood's atmosphere. Places such as Nifty Fiftys, Johnny Rockets, and Ruby's Diner to name a few, plus any other 1950's soda fountain diners of this type.

And where else can one get a $5 milkshake (sorry, another movie scene came to mind -- Pulp Fiction, Travolta and Uma Thurman in the retro diner, where's he's shocked that a milk shake could cost $5)

I wouldn't mind a Stewart's or A&W Rootbeer joint.
Love those places, and they could easily be done up in "retro" fasion to fit the Wildwoods atmosphere.

Oh Al a Stewarts or A & W would be a wonderful addition on the Boardwalk. Why not both? The walk is long enough to support both. Not on the Boardwalk but I've said before a Sonic drive in would be a prefect fit for The Wildwoods. www.sonicdrivein.com/index.jspJust imagine it sitting there on Rio Grande along with the Wawa, Commerce Bank. re
