re, I agree that the Boardwalk could easily support such businesses. Like I mentioned, I'm not absolutely wild about chains and corporations coming into the Wildwoods, but I see it as something of an inevitability. The best thing now would be for the island to prepare for such an event, so that potential businesses like a Sonic drive-through (great, great idea there) or a Checkers, A&W, Stewarts, etc., could be courted properly. Places like this could really add to the Wildwoods' marketability, appeal and overall atmosphere. Interestingly enough, I'm starting to see these fancy new "retro" McDonald's pop up all around the country during my travels. Here's a pic of one in Virginia (I'm sure there are better pics of these places out there, but this is just a quick glimpse)... There's also one of these in the middle of nowhere in a pretty lousy neighborhood in Bethlehem, PA, of all places. It's a real shame that one hasn't been built in the Wildwoods yet, because it would be a terrific fit. Of course, they'd have to tear down one of the two McD's on the island in order to build one, and that probably wouldn't be too feasible. But, it's a thought.

Al, here's a little food for thought for ya... (food for thought, McDonalds, get it? ) ;D A while back , just after the new Rio Wawa, there was a rumor that the Rio Grande Avenue McDonalds was going to change to a doo wop design. They did redecorate the inside of the store but nothing really significant outside. Just last week, they removed a large portion of the main sign on the Rio side (the part that said billions sold) and now there is only one very small golden arch left on Rio. Anyone heard if they will be doing anything with a doo wop sign? Thom

Actually, there used to be one of these "retro" looking McDonald's in Pleasantville, NJ.... it was right off of the Black Horse Pike. Unfortunately, it was torn down and if I am not mistaken, a new McDonalds was built in the same place. That Mickey D's was so cool.... I remember it like it was yesterday. Does anyone else recall this??

Wasn't this the original style of all the Mickey D's, or at least pretty close to it? I think the first MacDonalds was in Mount Prospect, Ill. I may be wrong. Thom

Anyone heard if they will be doing anything with a doo wop sign? Thom Thanks for the info there, Thom. Sounds like some potentially interesting stuff going on with that sign... perhaps a new Doo Wop sign is on the way...? Definitely something to watch there. I do vaguely remember hearing rumblings of a "neo" Doo Wop design for the McD's on Rio Grande. Ultimately, I was a little disappointed to learn that they were only renovating the inside. It's funny to me that there are so many "retro" McD's popping up, but none yet (at least externally) in the "realm of retro" itself, the Wildwoods. (Just remembered another one nearby, right at the Circle... or what used to be the Circle... in Berlin, NJ on Route 73.) Well, I guess if you want to get technical, the McD's on the Boardwalk does at least feature two very nifty retro signs, and inside is at least done up in a 50s style motif. But, one of these "stand-alone" versions would really be something to see on the island.

I think the first MacDonalds was in Mount Prospect, Ill. I may be wrong. Thom The very first McDonald's was in San Bernardino, California, a town located along the infamous Route 66 trail. I was lucky enough to be able to make a pilgrimage to this location (the original building was demolished, but a new restaurant is now up in it's place) when I was staying out in San Diego a few years back. Here's the location's official website: www.route-66.com/mcdonalds/
