Now I'm gong to show my age here, but does anyone recall making an effort to look good on the boards? Wearing a nice outfit (albeit ride friendly) and just looking sharp? One of the things which has kept me away from Wildwood for years is the general shabbiness of the folks on the boardwalk (though I haven't really "strolled' in years, so forgive me if that's changed). Last walk I took, I just couldn't wait to get back to my car and get aWAY...so disappolinting...so many folks looked like thugs to me. God, that sounds terrible, but it's true. Any thoughts?

I still like to look nice for the boards. No thug-like clothes here! :-)

I dont think it is as bad as it was in the 80s and 90s. I can remember many fads that came and went and it is not that bad right now. Now if you mean when all the woman wore dresses and high heels then yes its still really bad!

I understand - Remember all the Easter Parades when families would all dress up fanatically? My dress up experience was a little different:
Prior to the Beatles invasion of America almost all the boys had short crew cuts or greased their hair back. When the beatles first came to America, I lengthened my hair as long as it would go and cut it in the required "Mop-top" style like the Beatles.
I vividly remember walking through the Casino Arcade on my first day out looking like this. I was mortified! I was positive everyone was staring at me and laughing their a**es off.
The mop-top lasted about two days!

I have pictures from the late 60's of our family on the boards. My mom is in a dress with a scarf in her hair! My dad had on long pleated pants and a collared shirt as did my brother. I had on a little girl dress. I remember our "big night out" while we were on vacation was to get dressed up, go out to ed zaberers for "special dinner," then we would go to the boards and my parents would let my brother and I pick out treats at Douglass Fudge. This was a big deal night for us! I think we looked forward to that night almost as much as Christmas morning. We would drive back to our motel gazing at all the neon signs aglow in the the fog. On another night, we would go to the boards and play mini golf at skyline and then ride the rides. Even for those nights we all dressed nicely. I agree, maybe I'm an old fart (no THAT old though...not even 40...yet), but I've been dissapointed at the appearance of the visitors on the boards the past few times I've gone. Its just a different day.

I always dress nice when we go to the boardwalk. Not super dressy.. but still nice. I always have. Back when I would vacation with my family, we always spent the day on the beach, then came back and took showers and got all ready for the boardwalk at night. I remember taking forever to get ready when I was a teenager.
