Oh Anthony, You have my mouth watering, Junior Tastykakes, my absolute favorite is the coconut. Like you, I go to Wawa many times for just them. Only they don't seem to make them in the summer. So next month when we do our "work" weeks, I'll go buy a few, and sock them away in the freezer for my summer cravings. The Wawa on Rio Grande, usually keeps the price of gas lower, it's a pita to get in and out of unless you come + go in the back.

Hi Wildre,
I see you are a rental property owner, A CONDO or TOWNHOUSE? I agree with some of what you stated, yes the firemen do indeed bring alot of their own food and booze, we stay at the Nassau Inn in the crest every year for the entire month of Sept. till mid Oct. so we see this every year. The firemen cook out on the grills and we do as well. What I'm saying is, they do not want to rent condos or a townhouse for the 3 or 4 nights they are at the convention. Our main complaint with all of this destruction is the ruining of the history, and architecture that made the island what it has become to thousands of families. My husband and I plan to purchase a HOME (single dwelling) in the crest by next year for retirement. If people want to rent out their SINGLE dwellings that's fine - we just DO NOT want to see these wonderful motels ripped down and replaced by vinyl siding look alikes on every block!!!! My husband KNOWS every inch of the island, even West Wildwood (which most people don't even know exists) - we spend ALOT of money on the island. I can understand the older owners of these motels from the late 40's to the late 60's not being physically able to maintain them anymore. But don't SELL OUT to corporate greed!! There are alot of young business people that would love to have the opportunity to possibly purchase these hotels and motels, and re-vamp them into more modern facilities on the inside while keeping the retro doo-wop flavor on the outside. That's what we as TRUE Wildwoodians want to see happen. The Shalimar is doing that, the Cape Cod Inn added another floor for bigger families to enjoy more space. Our dear friend Pat that owns the Nassau Inn is going "condo" with her place, but still keeping the Nassau Inn to run as it always has, a motel. The maids will not lose their jobs, the linen service will still have them as a customer!! That's what we're talking about - you can update and advance, just don't destroy!!!! My sister-in-law and her husband managed a building of 18 condos in North Wildwood (right off the boardwalk) for the past 2 summers. They would tell us how the owners would call EVERY day to make sure they had their places rented out - SO THEY COULD MEET their mortgages!! It was a headache!!! It's not because we are in our 50's that we are "stuck" in the past, we just want the "look" of our island to always reflect the good times and era that was happy!!! We do not want our island to look like OC, Sea Isle, Avalon, Stone Harbor, or Cape May - they are BORING!!! Those places are ok to visit for an hour or two - but then that's enough!!! Nothing to do there, you can't ride bikes all over the island there - like you can in Wildwood - and the beaches at those other shore points - oh God, sewer drains running down the beaches, and you have to pay to go on them - GET REAL!!!! Wildwood is coming back - thank God the 70's and 80's are GONE!!! They are learning from their past mistakes, keep it family oriented, get rid of the crappy bars, and we'll be fine!!!

shoregirl, No townhouse/condo for me. I own a duplex, built in the 30's, that's been in our family since the 50's. Several years ago we completely gutted the inside, without destroying the charm of the exterior. The boom hadn't started yet so I guess we were ahead of the curve.
I agree, the blatant destruction has to be controlled, but until the City Fathers restrain themselves from approving all these variances, nothing will change. Yes, all homeowners pay the same rate of taxes, etc but we have no vote on what goes on there. I go to many Council Meetings to speak, and sometimes they listen, sometimes not. However I do continue to try to voice my concerns about many things that need to be addressed.
The motel owners are between a rock and a hard place. The prices are going up, some Motels are on the market for well over 3M, the Heart of Wildwood is at over 11M. What young person has that kind of money or credit, how could they break even? Hence the developers come in and pay them these million and build condo/townhouses. I can't blame the owners for taking advantage of a great real estate market, heck they stuck it out during the lean years. My ideal would be motel conversions, like the Lollipop in NWW and a few others. They maintain the integrity of the area, and what made us popular but still very marketable for these changing times. This concept isn't new Le Boot has been one for years.
There is no place like Wildwood here in NJ or any place else!!!! We just need Stakeholders to come forward and do what is best for everyone and not just for a few. Return to the roots of Wildwood with a 21st centruy appeal. A Unique, Family Oriented Island with something for everyone!

Wildre,
I couldn't agree with you more!!!! I envy you living down there all year!!! That's my husband's DREAM!!!
Hope to see you in the Wildwoods sometime this year, we start our trips in March straight through to Oct. and last year we were down several times every month. We'll be down next Thursday till Monday. We're checking on several listings of homes. The house definitely has to have 3 or 4 bedrooms, 2 or 2 1/2 baths, and a 2 car garage is a must!!! (Salt air on the vehicles is a no-no!!) Have a wonderful Easter!! shoregirl

shoregirl, I wish I lived there year round. I spend about 5 months a year there. Hope to come up next month for a few work weeks. I'm around from May to October, hope to see you. Good luck, hope you find your "dream home", soon. Don't envy you the househunting, prices seem to change weekly.

Hi Wildre,
Thank you - I hope we can find the house of our dreams, but I'm afraid the (Mega Millions) lottery is something I'm going to need first!!! We love North Wildwood, Anglesea, and the Crest - so here's hoping we can find a house that won't take us until we're 85 to pay off!!!! Hope to talk to you again, maybe sometime this summer we'll see you in the "Wildwoods", Car show weekend and the Irish Festival is our favorite!! We will be down next weekend, then Mother's Day weekend, Memorial Day weekend, 2 weeks in June, 4th of July week, Labor Day weekend, then straight through till after the 2nd annual Fabulous 50's weekend in Oct.!! We love it!!! It was really nice talking with you - have a fabulous 2005!!

Actually, you can ride bikes in and around Cape May probably as much as you can anywhere in Wildwood. It's just not as exciting compared to Wildwood. Give it enough time though, with all the Populuxe motels coming down, and I'm sure it will equal those others homogenized shore towns in "excitement."
I know West Wildwood pretty good myself - especially around the Ottens Harbour area and going more towards the Wharf Restuaurant where I had a few cousins and friends living when I was growing up. I especially how much that area would flood during storms!
Just curious...Does your husband recall a fishing stop called Dad's Place?

Hi Anthony,
Yes my husband remembers Dad's place. He would always tell me me also how Morey's Pier started out as a minature golf course, and he remembered Ogden's restaurant too. I can't believe I didn't remeber Ogden's on the beach, where Curley Fries is now!!! It wasn't until I looked up old photos of Wildwood that I could visualize it. But for the life of me I can't remember the game in the OLD arcade building that had the game of chance where they used the cute little "piglets"!! My husband lights up like a little kid when we are heading into Wildwood!!! He'll be 56 next month, but when we are driving down the Schuylkill towards Jersey, he's 6 years old again!!!! As a kid his family always stayed at the "Reading Motel", go to Woolworth's for breakfast, and Harry's for dinner. Harry's is now the Lobster Shack across from Laura's Fudge and the Martinique Motel!! What a shame that place is now!!! But it's coming down, we stayed there back in the mid 70's. We call my husband "the mayor" Wildwood is his passion!!! I have to check with a dear friend of mine (Pat) that owns the Nassau Inn at Ocean and Sweetbriar to see how the conversion of the Nassau to condos is coming along. We stay there every year it is a wonderful place!!! Pat did not want to see her beloved Nassau torn down, so she is selling the units off as condos, it will still run as a motel, the staff there is THE BEST!!!! No one will LOSE their jobs. If owners do this instead of destroying the buildings, then my husband and I will not be so furious with this situation. As I said, if Pat can do this, and there are over 85 rooms at the Nassau, and the Shalimar and Cape Cod Inn are improving, there is absolutely NO NEED for the "older" owners to "SELL OUT" to corporate GREED. I'm praying people like us that truly CARE about the island can win this fight!!!

I think that the area campgrounds will make out well with all of the demolitions and condo prices. We love Wildwood but stay on the Rt.9 corridor because it got to expensive in the city of Wildwood. Hopefully the architecture of the new condos will stay mostly with the Doo Wop theme. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Wildwood is in a flux right now and who knows how it will turn out.
