What ever happened to WW's first motel, the Ship Ahoy, is it still around or was it demolished.

I'm not positive that the Ship Ahoy was Wildwood's first motel... Ongoing research on the matter suggests that a few others might have actually popped up a little earlier. I will pass along more info on this soon...
At any rate, the Ship Ahoy is still standing, but is apparently for sale. I am not aware of any pending or confirmed plans for new construction on the site, so as far as I know, the motel (the building at least) is sticking around for now.
We all know how quickly things can change on that front, though. As far as I know, the Ship Ahoy did operate during the 2004 season. So, it is certainly not beyond the realm of possiblity to think that it might be open once again this year.

According to some people I've met at the Boyer Museum, there were two SHIP AHOY motels (both of the same design) in the Wildwoods - one if which was possibly destyroyed and the other which was moved towards the west side of the island.
I'll have to check and see if I can actually get some facts about the SHIP AHOY history. I know that one SHIP AHOY was once located next to the Sun Deck and Sun Dial only a few yards south of where THE OCEANIC is today.

I have an old post card of the "Ship Ahoy Apartments" that appears to be from the early 50's. At that time the motel was owned by Blanche and Berthold Brown and was located "at Ocean and Taylor Avenues" right on the corner. Not sure that it was the first motel of the Wildwoods, maybe the first that looked "doowopish" with 2 stories and "theme" decorations including life preservers and ship's wheels adorning the railings. I'd suspect that some of the "ranch style" motels like the Flamingo Terrace and the Modinaire were a bit earlier...but not sure. I'll be interested to hear. If anyone is in the WW area...swing by the corner of Ocean and Taylor and see how the Ship Ahoy (not Ship's Ahoy) is surviving...if at all .

I have also heard something about their being at least two, identical "Ship Ahoy" Motels in the Wildwoods at one time, Anthony.
Very interesting... We'll have to pool our research together at some point and see what we can dig up about the history of this institution.
The Ship Ahoy that exists now (it's still standing, but I'm not sure if it's still "open") is at New Jersey and Barker, right next to the City Hall/Police/Fire Department complex in Wildwood.
Off the top of my head, I am not sure what is at the corner of Ocean and Taylor today. I will swing by and check on my next visit (probably in a few weeks or so).
