Its a nice little place Martin. Clean rooms and a large pool that hardly has anyone around it(at least that was the case when I stayed there. The new private condo being built next to it makes it look small but the Pyramid is definitly worth looking into if you want to stay in the crest. Good to hear. It seems well looked after...

Another thought.....I never noticed how big the HiLili sign really was.....I guess its an illusion....even though it was high up on the building, it never looked that big...... What was the playpen? I never heard of it. the playpen was a club. the hi lili sign is big

Mike, you slaughtered me with those pictures. I was expecting just some views of the Cavalier signs and the coffee shop. I wasn't prepared for the demolition shots, or the Ebb Tide and Playpen and Ocean Theater signs, and then when I saw the one of the Rio Motel with "THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES" up on the marquee, that did it. Wow. I too am wondering what else you can tell us about the signs. sorry the signs are for the neon garden the rio sign was posted here from rhi.

mike and I received the same tour of the old G.C. Murphy Building, courtesy of Fred Musso.
One thing Fred mentioned to me prior to my visit was to note how deceptively large the many motel signs are. It really is amazing when you see them right in front of you, at eye level.
The Hi Lili sign, the Cavalier, Shore Plaza, Swan and several others -- they are beasts!
It really does help you appreciate the hard work and craftmanship that goes into creating and maintaining these signs when you look at them in this light.

I noticed that and forgot to mention that. It looks like the whole place is getting a makeover. You are talking about the closed motel off of Rio Grande? Right?

the signs are for the neon garden Oh, that's good. At least the garden will have a few of the major ones. I talked briefly with Bob Bright Jr. at the Boyer museum on the last day of my recent visit. If I recall correctly, he said the items going into the Neon Garden would be mostly smaller specimens. He mentioned that the museum hopes to annex an adjacent lot where there's a condemned building currently. If that happens, he said, the museum will be expanded and some of the new space will be used to showcase large pieces from Fred Musso's neon collection. Yeah, I noticed that you credited him on flickr but I didn't realize he'd posted it here. Thanks Mike, and thanks, Rich, for that very poignant image. Were both Cavalier signs saved? What about the one that was on top of the building?
