A sad topic to post but does anyone know of any places/ motels that will not be with us in 2007. We already know the Hawaiian Rumble is gone and I would be willing to bet all the tea in China that the Beach Colony will be gone since it was supposed to come down last year with the Kona and Hi Lili

Thankfully, I haven't heard of any, besides the Jolly Roger possibly. Not sure about the Beach Colony...

I was hoping the Jolly Roger could soldier on one more year. I'd like to take my son there next year.

The lady who owns the Beach Colony wanted double what my inlaws got for the Kona Kai. They all said she was nuts and would miss out. Unless she lowed her price, that motel isnt going anywhere.

I've heard the same about the Beach Colony, Phil. Apparently, the owner wants to continue to operate, and, as you mentioned, will only consider selling for an astronomical price. If this is true, that's great, as I'm sure most of us figured the Beach Colony to be a goner for sure. The Astronaut needs company on Stockton, so hopefully these two smaller motels can continue to exit there in the shadows of the big condos going up around them, and will do well. I haven't heard anything on the Jolly Roger, but I really can't see it going. My guess is that the condo plans made were merely contingency plans, like a lot of the motels (especially in that area) have made. Could it be that we are finally in for a relatively quiet offseason? I don't want to get my hopes up yet, but things are looking good so far...

Al - About those "condo plans" for the Jolly Roger: Don't the Moreys own it and if so why would they ruin something as famous as the Jolly Roger? Also, don't forget that the word condo doesn't automatically mean demolition. Hotel rooms can be modernized and sold in the condo form of ownership and still look like hotel rooms. Thom

Thom, I know that "Morey Hospitality" runs the Jolly Roger, but I'm not certain that the Moreys neccessarily own the motel. I could be wrong, though. But, that is my understanding.
As for the "condo plans," I believe something very specific was announced/mentioned earlier on. Something about "redevelopment" or new residential units or something.
In other words, the inferrence was that the Jolly Roger site had been approved for demilition/new construction (though, the word "demolition" was never used).
Does anyone else remember this, specifically?

This is my point exactly. It is sad that a nice place like the "Jolly Roger" risks getting euthanized, while some flea bags limp along year after year like mangy dogs.
Sad Sad Sad.
Why not get rid of the dogs and keep the nice places? Then we can have the best of all worlds, while also raising the image of WW to the rest of the mid-Atlantic.

Not to take this topic too far off course, but this is the point of all points, as far as I'm concerned. I think we're all willing to accept change, but it's difficult to watch very servicable businesses be sacrificed en masse year after year, when rundown eyesores like the Lampost Diner and the 3000 block of the Boardwalk just continue to sit and fester. No disrespect meant to the Lampost or any of its fans; it was one of my favorite diners on the island, for sure. But, it just sits there dilapidating while well-patronized businesses like the WW Diner, Duffinetti's and the Captain's Table disappear each year. Beautiful, pristine motels like the Lurae are demolished, while some of the "dogs" lastresort spoke of continue to operate. The island seems to be in such a hurry to complete this so-called "upscale" transformation, and yet it seems to be, by and large, the entities and areas that already hold much value and potential that are being targeted. Clear up the abandoned buildings and brutal eyesores first... then move on with the process of "progress." That would just seem to make much more sense than path that's already been/currently being taken.

I agree Al, if you truly want to make progress you should first start with the places that are non servicable or beyond repair. If the Colony does stay put that's good news. I thought the Jolly Roger was still owned by the Morey's as well and is still being advertised as a Morey's property but Martin had mentioned in an earlier post that ownership changed hands at some point, so who knows? I just hope the jolly roger stick around a little longer at the very least.

I recently heard that the MOreys don't own it any longer and that it will be demolished....but I remember someone saying that specific things from the Jolly Roger would stay in the new complex...specifically the little man who sits on top

Last I heard the Jolly Roger was still associated with Morey's. But maybe that has changed?

On my wish list for Christmas. Keep the Jolly Roger operating for a few more years at the very least.
