The Sunflower Motel is a neat little place that gets overlooked! The Mango and the Alton are other examples of tiny little places still hanging on.

The Sunflower is a great motel. My girlfriends and I stayed there for Senior Week and had loads of fun! It is in a great location, one block from the boardwalk and almost dead center to the boardwalk. The owners were like parents to all us kids that week.
One year after we had our kids we did spent a long weekend there. It was a little rough with no elevator and lots of baby equipment but it was nice to park the car and not use it the whole time. I prefer North Wildwood but if we could not find a place there we know we have a familiar backup.

we too have done this. Its a whole lot different to walk around the island then to drive.. You get to see everything from a different perspective. Its quite refreshing to do..
quote author=doowopper2 board=motels thread=1160708775 post=1160766460]Man why did I have to read the last paragraph in the OP? Now I'm anxious.
There are also some motels left far back towards the bay. The Alladin is/was almost in the middle of the island in the Crest if I remember correctly. Oddly enough two years ago when I found it there was No Vacancy and the place really looked good. This past summer my dad and I walked around the very bottom of the Crest (since we were at the Reges). We walked to the very last street at the end of the island and then back up through the side streets until we made it up near Sunset Lake. Being in the residential section and far from the ocean gives a totally different atmosphere. Next year, or this winter if I drive down, I hope to do some more side street exploring. It's fun.
I agree with the estimates here on how many motels are left. I think many assume it was even more because the many of the motels we lost were our favorites, and highly visible.[/quote]

damn, Al *IS* good ;D Just to give everyone an example of all the smaller hotels on the side streets that we might not necessarily think of at first, I was reminded of a cute little out-of-the-way hotel today that you might not think of at first. Anyone guess the name of the little hotel in the 300 block of east Glenwood Avenue a few steps east of St Ann's Church? Clue, the color scheme is bright orange on the sign, etc. Give it your best shot, Wildwoodians! Thom Might you be referring to the Sunflower Motel, Thom?

Does anyone know if the Tower Motel is still standing? I remember the rooftop sign was kind of cool.

P.S. We've had a good dry spell recently concerning demos, but in a trip around town the other day, I learned accidentally that another one of our favorites is about to go. The day after Thom's tease above, some of our most plugged-in members started raising question marks over the Eden Roc out of the blue... And then this morning, I'm transferring some bookmarks and I end up on one of the Roadside Peek Wildwood pages, which says next to the Eden Roc's picture: "Unfortunately the Eden Roc here in NJ may soon be demolished." www.roadsidepeek.com/rpeekeast/moteleast/wildwoodmotel/index2.htmThat page hasn't been updated since early '05 so the comment is old, but... Am I getting warm here?

2201 is condo's but all are facing the side street. The ND backed up to the Bayberry on Surf.
Also noticed that the Eden Roc is for sale by owner, again.

Oh, I did see that--you were one of the "plugged-in members" I was referring to. I was just speculating that maybe the sign or listing or whatever you saw that said the Eden Roc was for sale might already have been outdated. You know how sometimes deals can get done very fast behind the scenes while we onlookers are still under the impression that the property in question is available. I would think it should still be possible to rescue this one... although I wonder why the owner "has been trying to sell it since the day she bought it," if thelastresort's information is correct. Some unforeseen problem with its condition maybe? Or perhaps she bought it when prices were really starting to climb, and thought she could make a quick killing. Does anyone know when she acquired it? I feel the Eden Roc retains a strong period flavor, even if it has soured a bit. I hope it isn't the one on death row... oh well, guess I should stop obsessing about this and be patient until tomorrow Fuzzy you may have missed my BTW on the Notre Dame tread. Eden Roc always for sale after the season, so are many others. Too bad about its condition, if you look at the early photos the design was among the best on the island. An ideal place to save, but would probably be too much $$$...its not all about just changing the interiors. In its prime it was owned by ex-mayor Charles Masciarella.

Before this past weekend my view of the existing motels would be to try to save as many as possible. But, my stay at the Apollo was an absolute disgrace. The two room efficiency was filthy, smelly, and totally disgusting. We walked into the room looked around and almost died. The rug was dirty, holes, and something smeared on it. Dead roaches around kitchen area. Mold in the bathroom. We didn't dare use the bedspreads. The refrigerator was on it's last legs. I was shocked. The entertainment center for the TV had broken hinges on it's door and the door was hanging half off. The remotes were broken, oh yes and instead of a light fixture in the bathroom we got a flouresent tube. Just the tube on the wall. TACKY!!! I never stayed in the crest and I probably won't now anyway because my whole idea of what these motels are is now ruined. I had to go to the ACME on Park and buy cleaning products. I sprayed Lysol around the hole room and on every surface. Also I cleaned the tub, toilet and sink. YUCK. The person who took care of the office didn't look to interested in what he was doing anyway. Seeing him laying out taking a nap by the pool which wasn't even covered made me sicker. I put up with it, god knows why? If they ask $185.00 at the peak of the season they should be ashamed. Shame on you. I Love WW and all parts of it. But this kind of treatment of guest should never happen. I needed to voice what happened to us so that it won't happen to you. Motels or Condos? I don't know now.

I don't know now. Wow... I've tried to get into the Apollo once or twice the past two seasons and did not like the way I was treated on the phone at all. After reading your account, the attitudes I encountered no longer surprise me as much. It's awful that this was your first experience with staying in the Crest. I don't think it's typical... I sure hope it isn't. Maybe when it gets this late in the season the more financially stressed motel owners try to let the wear and tear of individual rooms slide so they can take care of all those problems in a single, more cost-efficient pass after they close for the year. But this sounds fairly extreme. I hope it's not because there's a sale pending. I wonder what the status of the Apollo is? Martin, writhinganacondo, anybody know? I'm really sorry you had to deal with such a deteriorated condition, and you must still be feeling justifiable outrage over it. But objectively, all those nasty conditions you mention are superficial problems that should be eminently fixable... Let's not give up on these motels, please. Especially the beachfront ones. The best we can hope for once they're gone is a neo-doo-wop hotel/motel property that will have a very tough act to follow. The more likely replacement--more condos--will tend to make the wonderful Crest beach less accessible to the general public, and given the slump in sales, will surely do no one any good.

THe Apollo is not going anyplace. It may need to be cleaned up as long as the current owner is alive its staying put. The beach in the crest is the best, if nothing else you don't have to walk 10 miles to get to the water.

Sorry you had a bad experience. Don't let a place not run properly sour you on the Motels in general...
