The WB mural has been up for over a year on the north side of the building. The developers bought the building last year sometime I believe and have operated it this year. I wonder when that will come down? That end of the boardwalk will look like bomb out Bagdad next summer unless something gives with the Rio Motel property. Check yesterday's Herald 's Real Estate section for a few pix and article about the "do" last Saturday. www.capemaycountyherald.com/re

I'm wondering if its current Web site ( www.ocwildwood.com ) may have been set up by the Princeton Junction Group, the developer--I doubt the previous owners ever tried to give the Olympic a new patina of coolness by calling it "the OC"... not to mention it's a stupid URL that no one looking for the Olympic would be likely to guess. Note the ominous insertion at the bottom: "Although years of tradition are coming to a close soon, exciting new opportunities are on the horizon. The OC's owners, Princeton Junction Development Partners, recently received local approvals to build a new, ammenity [sic] rich vacation resort." As mentioned on the other thread, some Olympic staff told me in mid-September that it would be open for summer '07, but maybe that's changed. I tried calling their reservation line but got only a recording inviting me to leave a message (I didn't, though I guess I should have). It really will. Which reminds me... if anyone comes across any info about the construction schedule for this monster, please post it! I enjoyed staying in the vicinity of the Olympic this summer, but as long as the WB is in progress, it's the lower Crest or North Wildwood for me. That big, crazy building has gotta be one damn noisy project. Thanks re... Sorry you had to go back to SC, by the way--please continue keeping in touch with us here (and at the new forum soon). Hopefully it will help you feel more connected to paradise until it's time to return again. I have a hard time finding stuff on that Herald site. Haven't found actual pix or straight report yet, but thought this tidbit from their real estate blog was interesting... Whether the [Wildwood Beach], as pictured, ever can be built is another question. When Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano spoke at yesterday's WB event, you'd have thought that CAFRA/DEP approvals were two weeks away. (Troiano is a major backer of the high-rise concept in Wildwood.) Developer Christian Nickerson, in a less exuberant -- and very compelling -- presentation, said that he and his partners realize that the DEP may require major design alterations and that they don't expect final resolution for many months. www.capemaycountyherald.com/media/blog/

Fuzzy - I have a story on the WB party with the picture of the building on this week's paper. The story says the same basic things: that they held a party to celebrate construction, they say they're going to be open in Dec., 2009 and CAFRA still has not approved any hotels. (The Nouveau Wave denial is being appealed and the Starlight Resort decision is pending). I also mention that there could be ( ) an approval or approvals coming soon, hence the mayor's upbeat attitude. Somebody out there seems to have some inside information they aren't divulging yet. Check out the story here: Thom TheWildwoodsReporter.com

In my humble opinion, it is a marketing scam "in the extremist" as Sgt. Esterhaus from "Hill Street Blues" would say. After spending many a moon in the downstairs bar, I can venture a guess that any family who choses this place based on their website is bound to be disappointed, unless they like the smell of grease in the lobby.

I'm going off topic sightly here but since it was already mentioned isn't the days inn the only chain motel on the island?

This group, Princeton Junction and partners, who are operators of the new WB and the Oceanic, also said that they have management deals with several national hotel chains like Mariott, etc. So it's possible that the WB will be actually managed by one of their partner chains when it opens in Dec., 2009. After some deep (alright, maybe not-so-deep) thought, I've "decided" I don't like it. The concept sounds nice enough and is definitely a place I'd love to stay if it were in Atlantic City, Las Vegas or Honolulu but it doesn't fit in with what Wildwood is all about. It will be a yuppie magnet and I don't think Wildwood and yuppies go very well together.
Maybe my opinion is a reflection of my growing irritation with architecture and architects in general. Architecture is supposed to be about function above anything else but lately architects are designing things that stand out just for the sake of expressing themselves. Look at the absolutely hideous buildings that they want to build on/near the WTC site in lower Manhattan- they're not things of beauty, they are enormous statues to feed the egos of their designers, and I hate how there has to be some kind of "meaning" behind every design. Since when did "a building for people to live/stay" become a bad reason for designing something.
Scale it down to a normal (Wildwood-esque) size and maybe they'll be onto something, but right now I think that is dreadful, even if it brings more hotel rooms to the island.

As some of us have been saying, a few well-manicured 10-12 story places along Ocean will do wonders, doo wop or not. This place is a monstrosity. But the Oceanic and Days are crap and ruin the look of the area by the convention center.
