Hey, guys - I took a couple of photos today so you would hear the news first.
Finally, after much delay, construction at Fox Park - or I should say pre-construction infrastructure work - has finally started this week. Below are a couple of photos to prove this isn't some fluke of nature, it really is true.
Since I just got home and don't have time to post all information and pictures just now, I'll give you the basic info I got today. More pictures, etc. will appear in next Monday's TWR.
The project is beginning about 72 days late, apparently because it had to wait until A.C. Electric either removed the current electric service to the park, or is removing it now. And also relocating electric poles, etc.
Also, there was apparently a problem with the steel roof supports on the old Surfside Restaurant, which is to become the new Doo Wop Museum. I haven't seen the blueprints or heard anything about the final layout of the project, so I'm not sure whether the new museum will stand alone by itself or whether it will be connected in some way to the new bandshell. Either way, some or all of the old steel roofing supports from the Surfside Restaurant apparently had to be "refabricated' because for some reason they either weren't the correct size for the new project or didn't match up properly or something. I still don't completely understand this because as I said, I haven't seen the blueprints.
There is no official completion date as of yet. Since the actual construction started late, they are updating the work schedule. Details on completion will come as soon as I can get them.
Either way, it's great news that at long last, we're finally seeing some action around here. Finally!
So far, they appear to have removed the old playground equipment and started underground utility work. It doesn't look like the tennis courts will be affected. And I'm not sure whether the basketball court in the background will be affected. And of course, there's probably no way "Memory Lane" on Atlantic Avenue will be touched. It's kind of sacred.
I sure wish I had seen the blueprints. Anyone know anything about the layout? Will Columbus Park be affected or will it remain in front of the museum where it is currently located?
I also learned today that there are discussions coming up soon with the DEP to find a solution to the giant condotel height problem. Apparently, officials don't seem too worried and are convinced it will work itself out.
I believe the application for the new Martinique Hotel at Oak Avenue will be coming up sometime soon. No details yet. Anyone heard any info on it yet?
Well, that's it for now. Details are sketchy but at least there is something going on out there. Keep on checking in...
