Well, might as well give some ideas on what could possibly be done to help save at least some of the motels in Wildwood, especially in the Crest where it (development) seems to be the most rapid.
I think the public (especially people interested in archetecture) such as students in college need to become more aware of the situation. Inviting classes dealing with stuff like that could help some way. If the wildwoods were to become more known as such a unique location I think people would respect the older buildings more. Ive never seen an asdvertisment for the Wildwoods anywhere and living in NJ im surprised. It seems the only way people I know find out about Wildwood is through word of mouth.
These are just off the top of my head, what else do you guys think can be done?

It's a great point, Doowopper!
Wildwood is a world-famous resort in a sense, but it has also become quite "isolated" to the masses in recent years.
I find it very sad that there has not been more widespread opposition (or genuine outrage) to the fact that so many classic examples of mid-century architecture have been destroyed recently.
The only reasoning for this that I can come up with is that people, by and large, just don't know what's going on. The Wildwoods have not reached out, and have essentially secluded itself from the world in many ways.
The resort needs to market itself much better on a much larger scale, and seek out ways to more effectively promote and (as you mentioned) expand awareness of the many great institutions found on the island.
I really like your idea of trying to persuade more students (and/or others interested in architecture) to the Wildwoods, to study the buildings and, potentially, work with the towns and motel owners to develop new marketing strategies.
Steve Izenour did just that a few years back. Sadly, since his passing, so much of what he and his students studied has disappeared...

I currently have a linked DWPL logo in my signature on the paintball forum which I "work" at. The age group is generally 16-25. Many of them have visited the Wildwoods before and just about all of them are into the retro look. When we move to our new forum software I'll speak to the owner about linking the DWPL website via a small icon somwhere on the forum. If we have a links section it could go there. I'll see what I can do once we move. I strive to get the point across about getting the younger generation involved as they are the ultimate future of Wildwood, and getting college level students involved is a must in my opinion, not to mention getting the Wildwoods more advertised.

Way to get the word out, DooWopper!
The more creative we can be in working to promote Doo Wop preservation in the Wildwoods (as well as this message board), the better.
I completely agree that raising awareness among younger people is an absolute must. It is very critical that those who will ultimately hold the future of the Wildwoods in their hands are educated about the island’s cultural history and importance.
And, again, the idea of getting college students and others interested in architectural history involved is an excellent one. This would clearly be an arrangement that everyone would benefit from.
Any specific ideas on how we could bring your ideas to life? I’m working on a few, and will pass them along in detail shortly…

It sounds like a pretty good idea - at the least it can't hurt. I think that of the people that do know of the problems with the motels/buildings, we can easily feel kinda helpless and not know what to do. It may be upsetting both to see all this happening and to feel like you can't do anything to help. That's where becoming a member of this organization comes in. I agree that these problems with the motels going to neon heaven could probably benefit from a larger public outcry, and having these issues even more well known.

nice new additions to the board.. I was getting worried. i was missing it for 2 days.
Yes, the younger people 'seem' to be interested in retro.. but quite frankly, they are involved with getting their lives in order with school and starting a family etc then to worry about 'some old hotels' that they wanan knock down for new houses,. Maybe Im wrong but us 'older' people seem more concerned that our childhood memories are going away..

Well, I am one of those "younger" people. And I am very interested in Wildwood. There most be at least some more of people like me out there my age. My friends in school are mad at the developing, and hopefully, it awares their parents of what's happening in Wildwood. And as for the link on the other forum, once we move to the new software it will be put on the homeage of the site. The general age there is between 13-30.
