Hey, guys. I just re-checked the lineup for this weekend's "Salute to the Sixties." Groovy and Too Cool! Just thought I'd ask who is coming and what group, event, person you're really looking forward to seeing, and why? I'd honestly love to go (actually, my parents, uncle and brother have already made plans to head down), but my wife has finals next week, so she's going to be pretty busy this weekend.
I could go and give her the peace and quiet to study, but that would mean taking our two-year-old along with me, and I don't think she's ready to spend a full weekend away from him yet.
So, I'm out unless I can think of something else, but I'm really disappointed about not being able to make this!
I hope everyone else has a blast "monkeying" around though! ;D

Frig the 60's. how is DOO WOP the 60's?? Does WW want to be Doo Wop or 60's? they are mutually exclusive. So, what are you saying exactly? That Wildwood should ignore any and all attempts to market itself that don't adhere strictly to the conforms of 50s nostalgia? "Doo Wop" is nothing more than a term. It was originally coined by Steve Izenour to refer to the island's large collection of mid-century motels (MANY that were built in the 60s and some even in the 70s, by the way). But, really, "Doo Wop" has sort of become a term that is meant to refer to the unique aspects of the Wildwoods. The Golden Nugget, to me, is Doo Wop. As is the Vegas Diner and Kelly's Cafe. The 60s were, by all accounts, a wonderful time to visit the Wildwoods, and much of the lore of the resort is steeped within the cultural roots of that particular decade. But, that's the thing about the Wildwoods. Different people "grew up" there and formulated countless experiences there over the course of time. So, like any other place, the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, etc., all played a HUGE role in the development of the island as we know it. And, get ready, because 60s weekend is already shaping up to be a success, and 70s, 80s and 90s weekends are going to be right around the corner... as well they should be...

lastresort,
I hope that you didn't take my previous post as a sign of disrespect or anything. I was just hoping to delve deeper into your "frig the 60s" post, and learn more about your point of view (while, of course, getting my own opinion out there as well).
Thanks for clarifying things.
You're right, you are not obligated to defend your position. Nobody is, as we are all free and clear to hold our own opinions for whatever reason we like. But, I found your position rather intriguing, as I haven't heard much "opposition" to anything like this before.
As for everything you stated regarding the 50s and 60s, I understand it, but I just feel differently. You clearly associate the Wildwoods with the pop culture imagery and atmosphere of the 50s, but there really can be no doubt that other decades and subsequent "eras" (for lack of a better term) helped shape the Wildwoods in an equally effective way.
As wildre noted in another post, 60s weekend, like Fabulous 50s weekend, is, essentially, a marketing event aimed at bringing as many people (and as much money) into the Wildwoods for these particular weekends. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
In fact, it's really cool, because these are situations in which everyone wins. The Wildwoods win out as the crowds come in, and the crowds get to come to a big party and enjoy the festivities.
Along the way, the heritage of the island gets to be celebrated, and the Wildwoods gain just much more publicity as a re-emerging resort with a very unique cultural identity.
The Wildwoods would be foolish to ignore the 60s, especially coming on the heels of the success of the 50s weekends. And, as I mentioned, this is why I eventually see a series of 70s, 80s, 90s, etc. weekends to be added in the future. Perhaps, in the near future.
I don't think that the 60s weekend "encroaches" into anything. It will be a stand-alone event for those who want to relive their childhood a bit, experience something new, come down to have a good time, or whatever.

Hi Al, thanks, no need to apologize, no disrespect taken. I guess with me, it's a few things:
First, I have just a visceral hatred for the late 60's. Sure, I like the music, but honestly, I think every ill in society today can be pegged to having it's origin somewhere between 1965-1969 (this can lead to a huge political discussion which is not appropriate for this board, so let's not get into it, it is just my position). When I think of WW, the last thing I want to think of is "peace, love, dope" and a bunch of f--king hippies.
Second, I find it very hypocritical for WW on the one hand to be touting itself as a "Doo Wop" 50's town, and then selling out to this 60's crap. As in one of my other posts, it's like Cape May having a "roaring 20's weekend." Sure, do what you want, it just makes no sense. Again, the lure of the almighty $$$, which is what has gotten the island in trouble in the first place.
Maybe I am just too sensitive about this, but I just am sick and tired of hearing how great the 60's were. I lived through it (although as a kid), and it was just a bunch of goddamn nonsense.
So again, "frig the 60's"

I can dig it.... but I think the Aquarius was built in the 50's or early 60's pertaining to the zodiac sign. But again, another thing poached by the 60's with that whole "Age of Aquarius" bullsheeet

I thought the whole idea behind the special weekends was to expand WW's season. If it brings more money into the town whats the big deal. Not all are dope smoking hippies. We had planned on attending. but in limbo right now.
